Can`t log in to steam need help!

I know that Steam is needed to register and play Half Life 2 thats why i desperately need to get on to Steam. My problem is that I am on a crappy school netwrok and every time I boot it up to update it it gets to about 30% and then mysteriously closes out. I try updating this thing on weekends and late at night when no one is on the network but it doesn`t make a difference. Will someone please help?! I don`t wanna not be able to play HL 2 cuz i can`t register off of Steam!

Same thing happens to my brother.. Well, sort of. He can't get server listings for it. I think your college(?).. aack, gotta go. sorry. I'll be back later today, to discuss it if noone else has.
