Can you play without the internet?

alright here's my problem. my boyfriend has been looking forward to this half life 2 game for over a year. he has spent the last year updating his computer to be sure that half life 2 will play on it. now that he has it he's run into a serious problem... do you have to have the internet to play half life 2. he doesn't have the internet on his computer. he does have a 56K modem installed and was wondering if after you register to steam, after that will you need the internet every time you want to go ahead and play. we know that there is a offline verison but we want to know if need to check in on steam then log off the internet to play... please let me know. thank you.

You only need to authenticate once at installation through "Steam". As far as I know, after that you can play Single Player offline.

in order to make the off-line mode work properly, be sure to unlock the game and make sure that you have 100% downloaded, u can c that by pressing properties on the game. Open up the steam folder, and write protect the file called clientregestry.blob, otherwise you might get screwed and need to log in again. if you want futher information go to steampowered.com and search for offline mode in the support database.
