in order to train field surgeons in afghanistan canada sent baby pigs to be used in training for ER surgeons ..doesnt sound all that bad right? these baby pigs are used to train for trauma ..in one case an anestized pig was shot with a 9mm at point blank range in the face ..the training doctor then has to stablize the pig ..then it was shot 9 times with an ak-47 and then stabilized, then it was shot twice with a shotgun and stabilized ..then it was set on fire and again stabilized ..this went on for 15 hours before it finally died

from an interview on cbc radio's the current this morning .. here's the audio file, if you'd like to listen to it yourself ..it's about halfway in I think

oh btw it's the year of the pig

I'd like to hear who said it before I comment and with a grain of salt.

if true, it is horrible no disagreement stern but humans a pigs do have a lot in common with each other.

*edit*

wheres the link?

listen to the program ..and yes they do have a lot in common ..that's specifically why they use pigs ..it's mentioned several times in the interview

Poor pigs. ;(

Is that how they make Canadian bacon?

How do **** do they stabilize it after receiving that much trauma.

no, canadian bacon doesnt usually come with bullets

Oh. Those must be pebbles that sometimes threaten to break my teeth when I bite into the bacon then, and not bullet fragments.

stepping way the heck out of my lane but I'm guessing that if the bullets were through and through (namely the ak47 rounds) then theres the possibility.

as for the shotgun blasts you got me.

I say go for it.
If they can do that for a pig, they can do that for a dying person.

This isn't some kind of torture situation, which would be immoral, because the pig was drugged to feel no pain.

Any sensible person would rather have a pig die in a test to save lives than as just another pork chop.
Chicken tastes better anyways.

I cant remember specifics but they may have said the training was meant to look at pain as well ..I'd have to listen to it again but dont have time now

still cant see how it gives us the right to perform brutal experiements on animals, and it's not to save lives but to better understand trauma

Wouldn't further understanding trauma save/improve lives in the end, though?

Do we respect the lifes of animals?

Personally, I can't see why its ethical to kill animals to eat them, but not to torture them. Although instinctively the idea of torturing anything repulses me.

Holy shit ... they did all this to the same pig? How was there anything left to stabilize by the time they got to blasting it with a ****ing shotgun?

it's not like the deaths/injury in afghanistan isnt preventable

You saying that we shouldn't be there in the first place?, or that it is just bad leadership of troops? It's a high possibility that I'm missing the "between the lines" statement. Clarify please.

I don't think torture of this magnitude is warranted by a possibility that just this one exercise will help the medic save a human life.
I may not value animals as much as humans, but there is point at which enough is enough.

Torturing...pigs....don't they know who I am...I'll ****ing kill them! All of them. I'll teach them my namesake. *wanders off to the rent'a'nuke shop*
In all seriosness, this is immoral and wrong, but nessecary. We could save many more human lives at the sacrfice of a few pigs.

*sneaks into Afghanistan and massive atomic device in strapped to back but noone really seems to care*

except if they go against your regime?

I've dissected a pig fetus before. which was fun cuz i stabbed it all over. I also gave my pig a nose ring:frog:

You pig hating bastard! I feel the pain of all the pigs of this world. Come my childeren! Attack!

If it results in the saving of human life, then its OK by me.

Agreed. I mean, seriously, goddam I want some Canadian medics treating me if I get blown up.
