the North American Leaders Summit in Montebello, Quebec Canada attended by George Bush, Stephen Harper, PM Calderone of Mexico

The Mounties and Quebec provincial police deny using agents provocateurs at this week's Montebello summit, despite incriminating video evidence that suggests undercover police tried to incite violence.

The denials yesterday did nothing to quell mounting outrage over police tactics. Anti-globalization and union activists joined with opposition politicians to demand an independent investigation.

i havent seen the video but heard a report this morning saying the same thing ..anyone want to give me a summary?

it wouldnt be the first time undercover police officers incite violence ..it's what the public expects from protestors

What would the point of that be, to prove that protests can lead to violence and there response is therefore justified?

hmmm, its obviously pretty absurd but seems almost clever.

clever? how so? they have a democratic right to peaceful demonstration ..by inciting violence they give the police a right to shut down their right to protest ..it's the cornerstone of democracy

Well, again ill state that it in no way was it appropriate, yet I have never heard of police doing this before....although im sure its done quite a bit.

Siden ote: is the political forum turning into a ghost town or what?

not enough interesting threads as of late

police often disguise themselves as protestors for various reasons in pretty much every large scale protest ..in a similiar summit I attended almost a decade ago police officers disguised as protestors literally kidnapped a protest leader and held him without charge until the summit was over ..police undermine democracy

Not really, in the UK demonstrations have been fired upon by police.

haha, ok just checking. I even re-read the post to make sure i wasnt going nuts

Ah, he meant Continental America.

nah that was a jab at me ..cuz I always attribute these sorts of things to america (US) .. :upstare:

Why would the cops want violence?

the summit had a designated protest area ...conveniently placed some distance from the entrance to the compound where it was held ..which is completely contrary to what protests are supposed to be about ..anyways protestors moved to the front gate and were met with a line of riot police in riot gear but it was deliberately peaceful ..they fired tear gas into the crowd and some dispressed but most didnt ..they tried that a few times but they continued peacefully demonstrating ..they had no legal recourse to remove them from the front gates ..i'm speculating that perhaps they needed a reason to disperse the crowd ...a riot would have given them a reason

It wasn't a jab at you in particular, Sterny. I was just taking the piss and kinda wanted to see how people would react to my statement. I'm a bit disapointed that no one flamed me for it :p

Agent provocateur-ing is a tactic as old as the hills and not entirely surprising. Still fairly nasty, though. It's extremely suspicious that the police aren't releasing the names of the 'protestors' they arrested

Why would the cops want violence?
I'd guess something similar to what Stern said - it is often far easier to deal with a protest in a heavy-handed way than to let it continue, and it is not infrequently that police attempt to provoke protestors, whether openly or more under cover. I guess if you're a police officer protests aren't much fun. They can be intimidating quagmires, encompassing completely mellow placard-wavers, more angry groups and potentially on up through stone-throwers towards actual violence. Most police forces seem to still believe that all protests include a contingent of yobs who are merely using the event as an opportunity to cause trouble, apparently motiveless. Probably they think this because protest makes their job harder.

Spam. Cease.

I can see why they would do this, alot is at stake for the US, Canadian, and Mexican Governments and their businesses, and they want to quell descent by making the protesters look bad.

Security and Prosperity Partnership, AKA North American Union, trying a bit too hard to make it sound friendly I think lol. What reason do they have for holding these talks in secret if no one should have to worry?.

Canadian police are sutpid.

Here, protesting is illegal without a permit from the metropolitian police agency's cheif (mainly due to traffic problems), and if they protest without said approval, they get disbanded by the Combat Police.

Of course, protests that have a permit can go bad as well, with molotovs and shit, but statistics say that out of the 120 big violent protests in 2006, only 11 were approved in the first place.

Quebec police finally admit the three were police officers

Quebec provincial police admitted Thursday that three of their officers disguised themselves as demonstrators during the protest at the North American leaders summit in Montebello, Que.

police denied they were there to insitigate a violence ..however they also denied the 3 protestors werent police up until it was clear they were and opposition leaders in parliament called for an investigation

Limited owning up. Nice one. :dozey:

On another note, my friend has boots exactly like that. OH SHI-

And the difference between there and Red countries is...?

You have to get a permit to protest from the police agency's chief in China too.

Of course Anti-Japan protests get approved relatively frequently, which I guess is the same where you live?
