Whenever i enter my username and password and press enter, it pauses for a few seconds, then says "Could not connect to the steam network. Either the steam network is currently not running or your internet connection is down. Please Check your internet connection and try again".

MY internet connection is obviously working, so i went to the steam tech support to see what might be up. It said that it was most likely my router was blocking some needed ports, however, IT did not tell me how to open and i have no idea how. Im running Windows ME and have a 3com homeconnect router which works like

MODEM --->Computer A
|---------->Computer B
..._________________|
Router-------> Computer C
|------> Computer D

Im running on computer C, if you need more information just ask, and btw im not entirely sure my networks set up like this. If it is important i can check and correct it.

Try opening up Steam.log in your main Steam directory.

At the bottom is going to be your last connection attempt. Mine are all saying something like "Connection reset by peer" which baically means that the servers are flooded, which we all know.

It's just gonna take Valve a while to figure out what the hell type of demand they need to be able to serve and get that ability up and running.

Till then, we're mostly fuxxored.

No, not a new router.

Valve's Steam network is messed up, and their client doesn't really seem to be very graceful when it comes to systemic networking failures.

It's a typical problem with programming, you write code for the "Best Case" scenario and don't really do much to accomodate for the "Sky Is Falling" scenario.

For me, I've
* Lost access to all my GCF files (the cache files), will be available when the steam net is up and running again tho
* Not been able to login
* Not seen any "Start-Up" progress meter, forcing me to investigate and repeatedly kill/restart their steam.exe client. I waited like 5 minutes with NO confirmation that running the Steam program does ANYTHING.

The Steam program is NOT ready for prime time, nor is the network.

Additionally, most Naive users will not know to look in the corner of the screen, ala Norton virus checker, for that itty bitty black & white icon. I can imagine users not realizing they're running steam, not even noticing the little icon in the corner.

Also, they have to double or right-click the icon, single-click doesn't do anything. Steam as a marketing tool will be a failure if Valve doesn't address the UI difficulties.

This latest release seems a lot less stable than prior releases, probably due to bugs being uncovered by the assault on their networks.

Gabe mentioned that the current bandwidth issues "scare the pants off us" or something. I wonder if they have concern with the user-facing aspect of this release, no progress-indicators etc!

PLUS just to add insult to injury, that little "Remember me" checkbox for the password has Never Remembered Me!!! I feel ignored! Hahahaha.

I just checked the All Seeing Eye and there's like 115 servers active with players in them. Valve has taken down the whole CS community through listening to us all whine, "I want Steam now!!!" and releasing it early.

They should have planned for unrealistic bandwith expectations, like in the situation of a Denial of Service attack.

Ah well, it's still a free product. But it doesn't do good things for their image.

I want my CS fix!
