The Creative software that comes with the X-Fi Xtremegamer isn't under the Add/Remove program list and I can't uninstall them using the disc. What the hell can I do to remove them?

Is there a Creative entry under the Start/Programs menu with a Uninstall shortcut? My guess is no but might as well check. Does Creative just not want you to uninstall their crap? hehe

When I uninstalled an Audigy 4, I don't recall there being any issue removing the software. Not sure about the X-FI's. (The only Creative card to stay in my system for any real length of time was a Sound Blaster ISA card.)

There is no uninstall shortcut under the menu. :(

Is there any way to remove it manually without screwing up my PC? I'm awfully paranoid about messing with my PC lately because it's running perfectly fine at the moment.

You can delete the folders on the drive easy. The registry entries are not so easy. Don't want to delete something there that you are not supposed to.

But the uninstall app would just do those 2 things above.

Here's the backstory to all this:

Windows decided to uninstall the SC for some reason yesterday as it gave me the "Found New Hardware" window. I decided to not go through with it and clicked cancel.

Today, I turned on my computer an hour ago and I had no sound. "That's weird", I thought so I checked the volume panel and lo and behold it was going through the SC and not the Onboard Audio.

Why does Windows seem to have a problem with remembering the audio drivers for the SC? It did this with my old rig and the same SC. I might send the card back at this rate, the software is utter shite. :/

SC = sound card?
You have the onboard sound enabled and have a sound card in there? Why both?
Disable onboard or remove the card. :p

FYI if you ever remove a card and put it back in when the PC is off, a lot of times when Windows starts up it will reinstall drivers as if it was new hardware. (not sure if you removed anything since you didn't say)

Just delete it from your hdd, then scan your registry with crap cleaner, and remove the broken registry entries.

I haven't delved into my PC case since I put the card in.

Can you recommend any non-Creative soundcards?

These all have good sound quality for music and good DACs.
$150-200:
X-Fi Prelude is made by Auzentech but with Creative's X-Fi chip. Drivers are made by Creative but I guess you are not forced to install all their crap. DACs and hardware parts are different from Creative's X-Fi (better DACs and on-amps for music). Just came out, probably hard to find. Only non-creative card that supports the current EAX version. EAX is a Creative thing so all the other cards support just basic EAX 2.0

Asus has a new D2 sound card (PCI/PCI-Express versions). Supports OpenAL hardware acceleration which can be used in VISTA.

<$100, basic EAX 2.0, no OpenAL hardware acceleration support:
Bluegears b-Enspirer
Inferno Sondigo

What do you care about most?
-a FPS bump in some games from hardware acceleration (EAX/OpenAL)? Example 1, Example 2
-Enhanced 3d positioning in-game(EAX/OpenAL)?
-Less bloat or driver conflicts?
-Audio quality in music/dvds? (if you have good speakers/headphones)
-other?

I don't know what is good for audio recording so don't go there. hehe

Accurate 3D positioning, excellent audio quality and no bloatware.

Accurate 3D positioning
Well, the game is going to make sure the sound is accurate for positioning. But EAX (not 2.0) will create effects with the sound to make it more immersive I guess. Like in BF2 I think it quiets the distant sounds more than what you would hear not using EAX. And it might modify the sound of an air plane going over head so it has an effect rather than be plain. Maybe give some bullet echo effects more depth. idk

Maybe check some reviews for that X-fi Prelude card. But for less money you'll be stuck with Creative cards if you want those EAX effects.

I have a have a b-enspirer and love it. Although I didn't buy it for a better game experience. Was for boosting music quality instead of using my onboard.
