Can't access Death Match anymore

I am somewhat new to Halflife 2. I have played Deathmatch 2 a few times but can't access it anymore. I launch Steam, choose DM2, choose a room I want to join that has players in it but is not full, it downloads maps and user info then just hangs or goes back to the Steam main menu on my desk top.

What's up with that?

my rig:

1.6 ghz cpu
1 gig mem
256 meg vid card
Cable broad band internet connection

HL 2 works great and DM2 used to work. Does the CD need to be in the machine?

I updated direct x,
I updated to the recommended beta video driver and it still takes me to my desk top when trying to join a DM game.

Nice upgrade Steam :-(
