Can't activate

Half-Life 2 and Ep. 1. A friend gave me them as gifts and sent them to my email address, yet when I click on the link to activate them, it won't work; what's wrong?

Please Help! I want to play Fortress Forever please!

Okay, that's a bit assholish. Here's the fix. Turn Steam on. Now click on the second link in the email you received. You get an error message, right? But notice how the link in your address bar has changed to a Steam function? Click on it and press the Enter key; you should get a "the application Steam needs to be opened for this to work". Press the Yes button and you're free to go.
