Can't bring up console

I keep trying to bring up the console whilst I'm playing HL2 but nothing happens. I just want to try spawning the Gravity Gun but I can't because the bloody console won't even appear. And before you say it, my copy is legal; I have Steam.

go to your keyboard settings and make sure it is bound to a key.

by default it is the '~' key

For american keyboards, yes. International keyboards don't have a dedicated ~ button.

Is there any way I can change it to this key? It seems to be automatically set on ~.

You don't need to set it to that, That key i said will be the default on UK keyboards, although in the options it says it's ~ just ignore it. Just try the key i said and see if it works.

Got the console working so i now have both the gravity gun and the shotgun in Water Hazard!!! thanks for your help, guys! I'm gonna have loads of fun now i can spawn weapons! I think I'm going to spawn the RPG next to take down the chopper more easily.

Just one more question about using cheats to spawn weapons: what happens when you get to a point where you're actually given a weapon? I'm at Black Mesa East now so I'll obviously be given the gravity gun soon, but as I stated before, I already have it, so what will happen then? Ditto the point where i'm given the shotgun and RPG.

You won't be able to progress in the game. Alyx will hold the Grav. Gun out to you, but you won't be able to pick it up, so she doesn't play her next animation.
You just broke your game.

Nope, don't think HL2 has a drop key. You'll have to load to before you gave yourself the guns, or restart the level, which will give you default weapons.

Get to Black Mesa East with G-Gun, start a new game from the menu at Black Mesa East and you'll have only the weapons you should have by then.

Well, considering I spawned the grav gun in Route Kanal, I'm hardly gonna go right back there, am I? Besides, I didn't do any proper saves back then; all my quick-saves and auto-saves will have been wiped. I'll just do what KA says, i think.
