Can't change advanced graphics settings

If I try and change the advanced video settings on HL2 or CS:S, I get an error message:

The instruction at "0x241927c5" referenced memory at "0x00ba9530". The memory could not be "read".

And the program closes. Does anyone know why this is happening?

Update to the latest gfx card drivers. Not sure if this will help but you could always try validating your cs:s and hl2 files using the following urls:

HL2: steam://validate/220
CS:S steam://validate/240

Not sure if it is related to your problem but its worth a try I suppose.

make sure your HL2 files are up to date; Just log onto steam while your internet is active and you will get the updates

i thought this was caused by not having enough memory to even run the game

Your computer obviousley is not powerful enough to run the settings that you selected in HL2 and CSS. Upgrade your computer.
