can't connect to steam (error 201)!!! please, please help

please can someone help. I,m currently halfway through halflife 2 but now I keep getting an error 201 cannot connect to steam network while offline. All of my email and normal internet works fine. I have tried re installing twice now but still the same. I've also tried backing up my pc to a date when everthing did work. I've thought about buying the game again but scared i'll have the same problem. please can someone help I can't take another day without playing the game.
