I asked because AMD cpu plus VIA chipset causes errors that could be fixed by using the latest motherboard driver, it says here.

anyone else have a similar problem? I can't get this thing to start.

game prob w/ Nvidia GeForce 4200

I'm having some trouble getting Half Life 2 to run. I have an Inspiron 8500 (notebook) with the NVIDIA GeForce4 4200 Go card (64M). First off, let it be known that I was able to play Doom3 at a good resolution with detail levels medium without any problems. A friend told me any system that could handle Doom3 could easily handle Half Life 2. So I downloaded and installed it.

When I launch the game, I get a warning message that says my video driver appears to be outdated, and it gives me a link to NVIDIA's site. However, NVIDIA apperantly doesn't provide drivers for the 'Go' mobile cards, and the only one Dell offers is over a year old.

When I choose to ignore the warning and load the game, it will reach the launch screen, but the in-game text is not visible (namely, on the buttons). When I manage to start playing the game (despite having no text) it stutters and eventually freezes.

I think it is a video card driver issue, but I could be wrong. I don't know where to go from here.

I did have, but my machine rebooted rather than crashed to desktop. I have the same video card as you and the fix for me was to uninstall the video driver (you have a recent one) and install an earlier one (61.76 to be precise).

from here :
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_61.76.html

probably a good idea to use Driver Cleaner to remove all traces of the current driver, before installing the one from the link above.

Hope it works

i had the same problem as mentioned by teebeebee1 but only with hl2. and im still trying to find an answer

your problem lies somewhere in here....

Card name: NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200

...hmm, around that area... sorry man, but ATI gets the winning ticket with hl2, funny how all the cards that screw up are GeForce.

my system is similar to yours, only difference is i use ATI 9800 Pro.

w00t! no probs. funny huh?

Was having the same problem

I was having the same starting problem 3 days ago. I uninstalled the game just after the patch was release as it did not work. Reinstalled the game and still not joy. Tried the update motherboard drivers still no joy. Left it a day and tried again just for luck and it work and is running like a dream.

Running the following system:-

Athlon XP2000+
512MB RAM
Gforce FX5200 128MB
SB PCI 128
Win98.

well, i rolled back the drivers, it gave me a warning screen "your drivers are out of date", yeah, no shizz

still no love for Dr Jones.

I doubt this thing is ever going to work , maybe my video card is incompatible :(

Having the exact same problem. Haven't found a fix for it.

I use a Radeon 9600 256 Atlantis. It just happened out of nowhere, for no apparant reason.
CSS works just fine, but HL2 doesn't. Disabling the 3D background brings me to the game menu, but it's all black. I have to navigate in my blind for the Quit box.
Quickloading just crashes the game eventually.

I hardly think creating a new game will differ any from using Quickload.

They didn't by any chance just recently patch HL2, did they? (the past 2 days).
