Can't get Half-Life 2 to work.

So I just bought Half-Life 2 today, and after installing it I start it up put all the video settings in order and start a new game. Well, after the opening cut scene (With some minor stuttering) I talk to the man sitting down on the train, when my game crashes.

After re-booting my PC I try again. I manage to get to the first loading screen (Shortly after you meet Barney), before it crashes again, mid-load.

Now I know about the stuttering being a problem with people who have not updated their drivers so I looked in my hardware and let Windows do a search for any updates for my processor and video card drivers, no luck. I thought that letting Windows to all the work was not the greatest thing to do so I also looked online my self, unfortunately I know jack about computers, so I had no idea what needed to be done.

So my question is, do I really need to update my drivers? (Windows said the video one was last updated in May-ish of 2006)
And if so, could I get a link to the one(s) I need to download along with some info on what to do?

These (I think) are my System Specs.

1.58 GHz (It keeps changing, so I have no idea what is really is, that is just the latest number)
980 MB RAM (Again, it keeps changing, it said 1 Gig earlier)
AMD Turion 64 Mobile
ATI Radeon Xpress 200

Thanks in advance for any help.

Oh, and I also wanted to know if G-Mod 9 needed CSS to run, or just Half-Life 2.

EDIT: I tried again just now and the same thing happened, it crashed during the loading screen. :(

Thanks.

I am still a little confused though. Assuming this is the right link ( http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_871_13349,00.html?redir=COGA05 ) which would be the right download for my processor?

And as for that link you gave me, which link should I go with? (Yeah, I don't know very much about computers...)

EDIT: I think the one for my processor would be
"AMD Turion™ 64 Mobile Technology Driver for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 Version (x86 and x64 exe) 1.3.2.0053 - Allows the system to automatically adjust the CPU speed, voltage and power combination that match the instantaneous user performance need. Download this Setup Installation program (EXE) to automatically update all the files necessary for installation. This package is recommended for users whom desire a graphical user interface for installation. This .EXE driver is a user friendly localized software installation of the driver designed for end-users. This driver supports AMD Turion™ 64 Mobile Technology on Windows XP SP2, Windows 2003 SP2 x86 and x64 Editions."

Near the bottom, is that correct?

The link in your reply is to update the processor, not the video driver. The two links I gave you should update the video driver. The Catalyst software is a bundle of utilities... I don't bother with it, but it's the easier download then hunting for your specific driver if you aren't computer savvy.

I know the link I gave was for my processor, I thought I might need to update the driver for that as well.

As for the video driver. I did use the one link you gave me where I had to select my OS and everything, downloaded the update, but it does not show as having updated no matter where I look. Even Counter-Strike says I need to update my driver still (While giving the same driver version number as before).

BTW, I tried that Catalyst and did not like it. It didn't appear to update anything, while being rather confusing at the same time.

did you actually uninstall the old video driver first? or did you just blindly plow the new one right over the top of the old one? you must correctly remove the old driver first for drivers to work 100% correctly.

I uninstalled the old one first, then installed the new one.

EDIT: The odd thing is, Counter Strike and Zombie Master work just fine (Most of the time), it is just Half-Life 2 that doesn't.

I dunno why people say this, I always just plop it right on top like a new layer of mayo and everything seems to work fine.

thanks. i get a lot of business from people just like you.

I've never had a problem with my PC, and if I did, I wouldn't bring it to people like you.

people like me choose not to associate with people like you in the real world.you wouldnt even know me, so you would never have the opportunity of being turned away and ridiculed by me in real life. hell, i only come here because i like the half-life games, not to put up with/have meaningful discussions kids like you.

No, you only come here to pick and choose topics in which you can put yourself on a pedestal and cry down to the masses about how stupid they are.

If you were as good at technical help as you think you are, you'd probably be able to assist people, which is a scary thought.

Um, can we get back to Half-Life 2 not working? I would rather like to play it without going out and buying the 360 version.

Okay, so you said the game crashes... do you get any errors, any sort of clue as to what might be causing it? Also, you indicated you adjusted video settings. Can you write out which settings you adjusted? That may help a bit.

Also, what other apps do you run simultaneously?

I know XFire, MSN, and one of my multiple anti-malware tools don't play well, so I have to turn them off prior to launching the games.

Well I always close MSN regardless of what I am doing, and no other applications like that are on as far as I know.

The latest error that I have been getting was something about "direct3d" or something like that (Before you ask, yes I do have DirectX v9.0c). Followed by "blah blah blah, memory could not be read."

And what do you mean by settings? Do you mean the video settings? If so, I have been turning them down bit by bit every time I try. Though the game ran fine with medium/high settings before (Back when it would actually start, now it crashes during the loading screen.), so I don't think it is too much for my PC to handle.

EDIT: This is odd, Half-Life 2 The Lost Coast works perfectly fine, but Half-Life 2 does not. Maybe something went wrong with the installation?

I promise I'm only trying to help... but... please (pretty please) can you capture the ACTUAL error messages? "Or something like that" and "blah, blah, blah" won't really help. Complete and accurate errors will.

I will give it a try again tomorrow (Technically today) and see if I can write down what it says. (Sorry I didn't respond sooner, I didn't think to check for a second page.)

"C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe" -applaunch 22 +mat_forcehardwaresync 0 +snd_async_prefetch_priority 1

^Huh?

Anyways, I am going to try Half-Life 2 again right now. Will edit when I am done.

EDIT: When I click New Game (Everything runs fine before that) it loads about 2/3 of the way when it minimizes then this pops up,

"Engine Error

Internal driver error in IDircet3DDevice9:: Present()"

After I click ok and then this appears a moment later,

"The instruction at "0x20234939" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read"."

I click ok again and the computer restarts.

Does that help?
