My computer got infected with this "SpyQuake" thing which seems to have installed some software that keeps making those typical IE spam pops up and then an icon in the system tray pops up saying "Your computer is infected with spyware, buy our software to get rid of it!" or something along those.

I've use Ad-Aware and AVG to scan multiple times but they don't seem to fully get rid of it as the pops-up continue. I know these threads come up a lot but I'm at wits end with this as it interferes with what I'm doing. I'm guessing there's better software to do this but I don't know what to use.

have u done these scans in safe mode? If not then u need to, u also need to have admin right in safe moed too.

Download & run spybot search & destroy.

Delete all ur IE caches & cookies, ie, tools, internet options, delete cookies, delete files & clear history.

Use IE7, Firefox or Opera for the future. As they say - prevention is better than cure, etc...

I do use Opera and have done for the past 3 years. I got the it from downloading a dodgy codec.

It turned out is was "SpywareQuake" which is a trojan that keeps spamming ads to get you to buy it. After following a tutorial I managed to get rid of it.

Thanks for the help anyway.

Oh sounds quite nasty. Where did you download the codec pack from?
