Can't get the half life 2 cd to work.

So i installed steam from the half life 2 cd and then it says that i need to create a account on steam but when i click continue, there isn't anything happening. i clicked on the steam icon and it doesn't open. I know that it worked six months ago when i installed the demo of half life 2.
P.S I tried installing steam from the website and it still doesn't work.

You've made the Steam account, right? Wait a bit, this happens on my comp as well. It might take about half an hour for Steam to appear after you sign in.
