Hi,

I have an Albatron K8X800 Pro II motherboard that i have been trying to join a wired ADSL network with. My other specs are; AMD 64 3200+ cpu, Leadtek 6800gt gpu, WD 120gb Hard drive. I am running Windows XP. I actually have two problems that could be to do with this motherboard:

1. I was unable to install the onboard ethernet adapter for this motherboard- i went through the install process, and after being told it was successfully installed, i find that it is in fact not. I have tried the 3c940 (driver supposed to match with K8X800 pro II) from the given CD and your website, to no avail.

2. After being unable to install the Ethernet adapter, i resorted to installing a network card in on of the pci slots, and found a message saying i was connected to the network. However, any incoming and outgoing packets of data are being restricted by something.(i.e i cannot ping any of the other 2 computers in the network) I thought maybe a firewall, or traces of one, so i reformatted the hard drive, and reinstalled windows, but with no firewalls, the same thing happens. I disabled the ethernet adapter in the BIOS (thought the network card was being restricted or something) but no change. by the way, the network card is working properly because i can ping myself, just not others on the network.

Please help!

Regards,

Ben

you sure it's not the firewalls on the other computers?

find out your IP and get the other comps to add it to the allow list in their firewalls

Are you connected to a router or what?

When you say you can ping yourself, do you mean you can ping 127.0.0.1? If so, that is not using the network, its an internal IP. If you ping that from any machine, even one with no network or dial up connections, it will still work.

Go into networking (From the control panel) and make sure there is an active LAN connection there. If so, check the machine is on the same workgroup as the others and that it has a unique name.

no i mean i can ping 10.1.1.4 (my IP) but not 10.1.1.1 (the switch) or 10.1.1.3 or 10.1.1.9 (the other two computers) and you're right, it doesn't show anything- don't know why I said that actually. But the connection is definitely there- also i tried hooking mine directly into the adsl modem, but same problem- detects connection, but no incoming/ outgoing

I am convinced this has something to do with my motherboard, as I couldnt install the onboard LAN, so used a pci network card, and now its bitching at me or something.

turn off Windows Firewall, also what kind of switch/router is it? If you can set a static IP on your machine.

yeah we have set static IPs, and they work for both of the other machines

any one else had problems getting 3com 3c940 drivers to work -that is, install on their onboard LAN? i can't get my ethernet adapter/onboard LAN to work. I think this might be part of the problem, although it shouldn't stop a pci slot network card from sending/ recieving packets.

Have you checked your on the same work group as the other machines? 9 times out of 10 its something blindingly obvious that you just miss for no good reason other than its "one of those days"

yeah try to think of the stupidly (in hindsight) obvious things that it might be

could it be that there is insufficient power for the pci lan to work? i'm running a 400w psu but its a pretty cheap one that came with the case and i'm also running a 6800gt and pci soundcard. It seems this is sometimes the reason why you can see an internet connection, but get little or no traffic.

Ask bliink, she'll know, got my network up and running along with the router and me not being great at things like this to begin with which wouldn't have made things any easier :)

all winxp me and one other using sp2. im thinking the lan chip's just buggered aye, cos pci lan should work regardless, unless it has to go through the onboard lan chipset in order to work.

Thats what it sounds like..

How does the adsl get into the network btw?

adsl is connected to a 4 port switch- cat5e patch cables with crossover adapters connect the 3 computers. Don't forget that this network definitely works- my connection is recognised- is just refuses to allow traffic.

A Question, if my onboard LAN doesn't work, will a pci NIC network card still have to use the chip to work? That would explain my pci network card not working either.

I think a seperate NIC should work fine dispite the activities of an onboard NIC, just make sure the device is active + installed and that the onboard is fully disabled. It might be a conflict between two cards.

Also, realise that XP Home is designed to "break" any home networks that have more than a certain number of XP Home machines connected (I think its 5 though..)

You have adsl with no router? Are you paying for 3 different IP numbers from your ISP?
Or does your ADSL modem have a built-in router?

we have a 4 port switch Asus, we can deifinitely run more than 2 computers. That is not the issue here -we have tried directly connecting my computer to the modem- still nothing

Also, Blink, i have disabled the onboard LAN in the BIOS. PCI network still doesn't wanna send/recieve, even tho it definitely works.

Remember that the connection is working- i have a 'LAN connected' status- the problem is in my computer, in that i get NO traffic whatsoever.

You have tried a different Cat5 cable right? (just in case)

Have you always had onboard LAN disabled in BIOS? or did you do that troubleshooting?

what happens if you type in dos prompt: "ipconfig /all" and "netstat"

once i started troubleshooting, i turned onboard LAN on/off.

When i type ipconfig /all i get detailed info, but i noticed 'node type' is set to unknown, and on one of the working networked computers it says 'mixed.'
When i type 'netstat' i get nothing- tried it on a working computer on the network and i got server addresses.etc. I get no info whatsoever. Not surprising considering i can't send/recieve.
ARGG!! Why does it say i have an ACTIVE LAN CONNECTION when i obviously dont? This is the pci network card btw, onboard ethernet is not and cannot be installed for some other (or maybe related) reason. This is gettin annoying!

Cheers guys for your help btw

bump. Im going to RMA the mobo tomorrow if i can't figure this out.
Anyone got any ideas?

Have you tried manually installing the onboard NIC and selecting the driver from the CD rather than running the installation program?

Right click My Computer > Administrate > Device Management > Network > Right click 3Com Gigabit LOM (3C940) > Update driver

You might want to make sure that previous drivers are completely removed before doing so though.
