cant play HL2

Hello all,

I just recently acquired HL2, installed game, proceeded to play but to no success. It started with the Valve splash screen then went to a black screen with a paragragh at the bottom then did a bunch of flickering went back to windows desktop and got this little window saying "now starting with new settings" everytime I click "ok" it just repeats. Long story short....what do I do? Save from buying a new video card. It should work from all that I have been reading. Thanks for any help.

Hmm, I wouldn't suggest buying a new video card unless everything else fails. Truth be told, I had the same problem. If you have two computers install it on the other one. I know that may not be very helpful but it worked for me. If you do not have two computers I really can't suggest anything else, short of just re - installing it. If you haven't already.

These last couple days i have had the same problem i reformatted my hard drive reinstalled half life i have a dual 1.6 ghz amd processors and a geforce 2 which runs half life 2 fine it was running great untill i reformatted Any thoughts out there? I also tryed swaping video cars and it didnt help at all

and u may need to update drivers....as a matter of fact...u really must update your drivers for optimal performance.

Did u "acquire" warez version? (if so don't even bother trying to fix your problem, won't work)

Mobo drivers, sound card drivers, video drivers, newest bios, SP2, other windows updates, HL2 steam updates...everythgin is up to date?

Geforce 2?? Ugh.. That is way too outdated... You should have at least Geforce 4 to get decent framerates throughtout the game.

It's a driver issue with nvidia.

I think the newest newest drivers fix it, if not roll back a couple of versions.

DOH, didn't even notice that...
He's right, ur geforce2 is too crappy to load the 3d background scene, much less a whole level. U really need to upgrade.

Specs for computer is....

-WINDOWS XP
-MSI K7N2GL MOTHERBOARD
-ATHLON XP 2100-
-1 GIG PC2100 DUAL CHANNEL
-GEFORCE 4 TI 4800 SE

Already had directx 9 installed before HL2 installation.

disable the into videos

add this to your launch parameters (without quotes) "-console"

i swap videocards to my gforce 5700 fx 256mb and no change i know its not the video card but some gay setting any other help?

How do I get to the console to make these changes? I uninstalled, reinstalled. Uninstalled video drivers, downloaded newest drivers, installed those! I still get this message... "Failed to set video mode-resetting to defaults."
"Game will restart with new video settings"
OK CANCEL

This is getting to be so frustrating. I am sure it is something so simple. HELP

This problem is most likely being caused by the newest 77.72 Forceware drivers from Nvidia. To correct this, please download and install the most recent non-conflicting drivers.
