can't play offline anymore ....please help

Hi,

I registered HL2 a day after it's release and everything worked fine including offline mode.
A few weeks later i had a hd crash and i kinda abandoned the game ^^
Now I reinstalled it, did all the steam updates and stuff but it won't let me play offline, telling me "this operation cannot be completed when steam is in offline mode".
Do i have to update anything manually or what else am i doing wrong ?

Any help is appreciated !!

btw: i don't have a permanent internet connection (hauled the comp to the place i work for steam updating)

The place you worked at is blocking steams ports.

Probably. Steam needs port 27015 to be open to work. And some others to play online.

Thanks for the reply but:
The place i'm working at isn't blocking anything... i'm sure about that... its a very small company and i know everybody there personally.
Steam did like 3 or 4 updates and then verified my game files for like 10 mins.
Everything seems fine and i can play HL2 as long as i'm online (i'm talking about single player mode ).
As soon as i try starting HL2 without beeing connected to the internet, i'll get that error message.
I don't really care about multiplayer over internet..... i just wanna be able to play the game at home.. without internet connection.
