Can't preload HL2

I was going to download the 6:th phase of the preload, but alas! When I started Steam, and got to the Half-Life 2 pre-load, it had somehow paused, so I clicked continue, but nothing happend, I tried it many times and re-started Steam, but that didn't help either. What to do now?
 
Steam have localised content servers as far as I know. It's likely that the content servers that serve Sweden are heavily loaded and therefore you're sort of in a queue to receive it. You'll get it eventually don't worry!
 
If it shows in your steam monitor, double click on it and you get the launch options, change the drop down to say always keep updated. I had to do that as it was reading 0kbs.
 
the local server thing doesn't work, it always puts me on a US server, never europe like it should
 
I have the same problem, it never shows any progress in the monitor window, and the continue button seems to be stuck. neone have any ideas on how to solve this, apart frm deleting and trying to preload again?
 
I had the same problem with preloading phase 2. suddenly one day it just started preloading after all. just give it time. it will start eventually.
 
I have the same problem with phase 6 and I live in Belgium :(
 
I had this problem too. I was stuck at 69% and the continue button didn't worked, when I clicked on nothing happened, not even a message of that the Steam servers were busy just like what I got when preloading the other phases.

But now I have fixed it. First I cosed down Steam and then I went into Steam's .cfg folder and moved the latest file (counter-strike source shared content.gcf) to another location so Steam couldn't find it. When I started Steam again and began preloading HL2 I was at 58% but I wasn't stuck anymore. It just went smooth (@1.5 mbit/s) to 100%. I hope this helps you guys too ;)
 
looks like i have the same problem... when i check the progress of the upload, steam freezes :|

Vinne_NL ur a genius, motha f*ckin genius, i was just about to dump all my GCF Files and start over as someone said its the only way to sort it. Did wot you said and it works no probs.
 
Just got the same problem. Tried what Vinnie said, and now it's downloading nicely. :thumbs:

Quick question, I dropped the cs shared content.gcf on my desktop....can I just delete it? I assume steam is re-downloading that stuff...?
 
Yes you can, I moved it to my desktop too because I didn't know what Steam was ging to do. So if something would go wrong I could place it in the Steam folder again. Just backup the cfg until your preload is 100 percent is my advise.
 
Oh and after that you can delete it. When I read my message again I realized I still didn't answer your question (can I just delete it?). I can't edit my post anymore so I had to make a new one.
 
I noticed the file was 900megs+. When I removed it, Steam just recreated another 900 meg file. Seems this is not real data and is just space put aside for data being downloaded, so dont worry about wasting 900 megs of your download limit or something when deleting that file. Well, thats what I think anyway
 
I already knew that. The benefit of that is that when you don't have enough free space on your hd you already know it so you can go find out what else can you delete.
 
I had pre-loaded it to 100% I'm sure, but when I checked today, the ****ing thing is back to 88%. Steam is driving me mad.
 
My latest preload is stuck at 88%, does anybody know what the latest preload is named so I know wich one to remove.
I have in my steamapps folder:

base source shared sounds.gcf
counter-strike.gcf
half-life engine.gcf
platform.gcf
base source shared materials.gcf
codename gordon.gcf
day of defeat.gcf
half-life.gcf
team fortress classic.gcf
base source shared models.gcf
counter-strike source shared content.gcf
half-life 2 base content.gcf
opposing force.gcf

I know I shouldn't remove gcf like dayofdefeat for that has nothing ot do with hl2 but I just though I'll list em all.
 
I my Steam folder the latest created file is counter-strike source shared content.gcf
 
I was stuck at at 88%, deleted the counter-strike source shared content.gcf, went back to 70%, continued, and now it's stuck at 81%!
 
I had the same problem, but im in the US. I just cancelled it and started from SCRATCH all over, but it did fix it and was able to get to 100%
