Can't run in fullscreen

I don't get it.. HL2 simply will not work for me in fullscreen mode... When I open HL2 it immediately detects what appears to be a video problem, and it changes the settings to the fail safe settings.

These fail safe settings work fine, but its WINDOW MODE. I had the game running fine in a window at 1600x1200, but this is a pain in the ass...

System specs are:

Athlon XP 2400+
896 megs of ram
ATI All In Wonder 8500 128mb DDR

I have the newest ATI drivers installed and I am using DX9.

One thing to note is that when I run dxdiag the check halts on directinput. "Please wait while DxDiag collects DirectInput information".

This is however the only thing that I can find wrong. All other games I have work perfectly.

This might be a dumb question but, while playing the game in window mode have you tired setting it to full screen in the HL2 options menu?

Yeah I have tried that. It makes HL2 crash immediately.... :stare:

I have the newest ATI drivers installed and I am using DX9.

He said that in the first post. And have you tried re-installing those drivers and using driver cleaner? Perhaps try re-installing DX 9.0c, maybe that can help.

This probably is a wrong guess but just in case make sure it's running in dx8 and not 9 although I don't think the game would let that happen as the 8500 is only dx8 and I think the game would recognize that.
