cant see text in menus

Hi I can install and play, but I can't see the text of the words on the menus.i got a p4 2.53 mhz, 512 mb ddr ram, w/ latest ati radeon le driver. on win xp home

I however dont have SerivePack2[access denied error], not sure if thats required.

For example in the options menu I get the following:

see, the problem happens here to, i can see the outline of two boxes which i can select,but unfortunaely i can read whats on it:
