So at work I have a case cutter in a holster on my side all the time, when I need it, it's right there. I just reach for it and use it for whatever and put it back.

Problem being is that when I'm not at work I still reach for it. A lot, actually. So I figured since I use it so much I would get a knife, preferably one with a holster/sheath, but don't need that.

In Ontario (already looked up the laws), as long as it isn't deemed a weapon (so a combat knife or something of the sort), it's perfectly legal to carry around concealed or not.

I just want a small one, not a foldable one (I want to just grab and use then put back easy).

Any suggestions on knives? I'm pretty sure there are collectors here.

Are you getting into street fights regularly? Why are you regularly reaching for your non existent knife?

We have one of those opinel knives at home, or one similar to it. I wouldn't call it quick and convenient though, it's pretty fiddly to pull the blade out of the handle. My favourite carry-around knife is a stanley knife. I used to dabble in backstage theatre (it being the family trade) and they're pretty much indispensable there, so that's how I got into the habit of just carrying one around. For theatre work, it was helpful to have a very distinctive one because people take them by accident/steal them all the time, so I got this (in the middle):

It was my favourite thing. I used to carry it everywhere with me. But then one day it disappeared. I suspect my father. Can't trust those ****ing actors with your stanley knives.

I can understand why you wouldn't be inclined to go for such a flamboyant stanley knife, though. You can get them in plain black or just with metal cases or whatever, if you want to be boring like that.

Kershaw makes great knives, and the blades have a lifetime warranty. Not too expensive either.

Just to be on the safe side you should probably get a red one.

I've grown so dependent from having one at work, even the smallest uses I always reach for my side. A strand of a thread hanging from my sweater, reach for the knife. Need a flat-head screw driver for something, reach for my knife. Cut rope, trim plants in my house (not illegal ones..), cut/strip wires, just generally anything that you could use a knife for - I reach for it! I just want something there so when I reach for it I have it!

I even reach for it when I'm cooking, cutting onions or potatoes or whatever. That reason alone is why I want a fixed blade. I don't want a stupidly huge knife, not even a big one, just one probably about 5 inches maybe? I dunno, depends on the knife.

@DEATHMASTER- Butterfly knives and switchblades and stilettos are all illegal.

You can't really chop veg with a stanley knife, though.

I can't help but distrust a product marketed to fans of a TV series on the basis of being lethal to something that doesn't exist.

I suppose it's one way to reduce claims of false advertising. Nobody can prove a thing.

I used to work in a warehouse and I have one of these:

I was supposed to hand it back in with all my other equipment and uniform but they were making us all redundant and shutting the place down so like... What were they gonna do about it?

Anyhows, it's pretty useful. Dunno if it'd be of any use for what you want to do, though. They have a fair few different variations of them and you should have no trouble with it being treated as an offensive weapon or anything like that. It's actually pretty hard to hurt anybody with it without breaking it apart and taking the blades out.

I don't know anything about carrying knives, but dude, use a different knife for cutting vegetables! otherwise your food will get dirty, yikes. (exception: camping and/or lost in the wilderness)

Price range would be good to know, Dog--. I could give you some recommendations for spectacular knives but I have no idea what your upper limit is.

Some initial brands to look at, though:

Buck
Boker
Gerber
Scrap Yard

Some knives to think about:

30-50 range:
Boker Magnum

50-100 range:
Spyderco Moran

Insanity Range:
Benchmade Nimravus Tanto
