That was fast.

Someone download and tell us non-doom 3 owners about the performance increase. :stare:

To download press the red Catalyst 4.9 at the top of the article. Took me a while to spot that. :x

Holy crap.
/me downloads

I'll report back after I test :) Thanks for the link (I'm already running the 4.8 betas)

I don't really like beta drivers.

/me has had bad experiences with betas.

well i think they should be ok as they have come straight from ATi and are not leaked like the 4.8s were.

Rage 3d forums were reporting 5-30% increase in performance over 4.7s. Thats pretty impressive, however it looks like its only intended for the x800s as people using 9800s and below have been reporting lower frame rates than previously.

Dear god, I buy something, and in under 2 years it's already discontinued... What is this world coming to?

Yes, this is a driver update for the 5% of those out there who have 400 dollar cards. I love it when companies cater to their fans.

OKAY! Just tested them. My average framerate was about the same, however, I had 8 spiders on screen all jumping at me, and my framerate was above 30 even with the flashlight on. It was dropping to 10-15 with the older drivers.

Running a 9700.. at stock, at the moment.

I edited my post to tell :)

Also, it's worth mentioning, I enabled self-shadowing models and your own player's shadow.. so.

Hmmm, so this new driver might bring me something good too. I'm also running a 9700, but the pro version. This needs testing...

But i'm to tired. Gnite.

Downloaded it and tried it with my 9800 Pro, no difference, might even slow it down a little, but I tested it in the most intense areas, maybe it offers some improvement in less intense ones (which would defeat teh purpose).

Sweet, I was just thinking about getting 4.8 beta and I see this thread. :)

the 4.9's dont go official untill septemer but it looks promising so far as performance goes.

sweet. gonna download and install now.

I've played the first 1 hour of Doom 3. That game is awesome. The people who complained about Doom 3 (and warezed it) deserve to be ridiculed in my sig.

Okay, I have some weird crap going on with these... at first I thought it had made me slower... then just for kicks and giggles, I ran some more timedemo tests, and it turns out that I get the same average FPS with both 'high' and 'ultra' quality. WTF? Anyway, I'll keep these on and see how they perform actually in-game.

what is the minmum card you need to run the 4.8 drivers?

Any Radeon family card will run on the 4.8/9 drivers.

Ok, I tried the following on my 9800 Pro in a specific area of Doom 3:
ATI 4.7: 20-55 fps
ATI 4.9 Beta: 25-60
DNA 4.7: 30-60.

So, my opinion, stick with the DNA until ATI comes out with the 4.8 which I couldn't test (the beta).

[EDIT]: Sorry, all fps were taken at 1024 and high :)

Whats the url for the DNA drivers? I have never heard of it.

Are they better then omega drivers?

DNA are "built" with performance in mind.
Omega are "built" with image quality in mind.

DNA is faster in most, if not all, tests.

should i remove my previous drivers before installing the catlyst drivers?

im having problems uninstalling my old drivers its telling me that its having problems extracting the support file, so will i be unable to install new drivers?

I've always uninstalled them through the device manager... that bad? :O

When you install DNA drivers, it tells you that it will first uninstall ATI drivers alrady present on your comp, so that's kinda nice (although I always uninstall them myself).

Been looking around a found a way which apparently gives a significent performance boost during doom3.

Link

Someone please try it out and report back.

Let everybody else 'crow' because they can, but because I can Mr. Green , I downloaded the Cat 4.9 'hotfix' this morning - 22MB, 23 seconds - I love it! Laughing

Anyway - I guess you can't call them 'fake' because they come directly from ATi, but these are exactly the same as the 4.8 leaked beta drivers that we have already seen: I uncompressed the file and did a file-by-file comparison, and the dates and file sizes on everything except a few *.INI and *.INF files are the same (7/27/2004) - the only changes are in the SETUP files to make them look like they are beta 4.9 drivers. Rolling Eyes Crying or Very sad EVERY other file is exactly identical - all drivers, all control panel files - EVERYTHING!

That being said - watch http://www.ati.com today or tomorrow for the release of the 'real' 4.8 drivers: they wouldn't post "hotfix 4.9" drivers for download unless they were just waiting for Microsoft to sprinkle holy water (i.e. "WHQL") on the already-to-release 4.8 version... Wink

It's the SAME THING!
