 well ok, not really

Did anyone find it annoying that the NPC's in halflife never said anything different when you clicked on them? I think they interchanged between 3 phrases. Any idea what happens in HL2? I think it would be pretty neat if they figured out how to dynamically change it. IE: I'm not sure i want to get in that buggy, you cant drive gordon (if buggy present)/ I don't want to stay back here with this scary dead alien(if you just killed an alien).

Well ok, the comments don't have to be that lame.

I don't really understand you but, for the first question, I kinda enjoyed the constant, same bickering that the scientists made when you shot them. :dork:

He had 4 at the beginning of the game where you couldn't get them to follow you.

He had many many more sounds for when you were able to get him to follow you, and many more when you asked him to stop following you.

All in all, if you haven't played the game more than 3 times then the comments that Barney made were rather plentyful.

That's the same for any other character. It still amazes me to this day that Barney and the scientists will converse with each other (all be it very basically) when they're standing together.

I guess it will be done very similarly for HL2. I hope it is, it works.

Anyone here who's played Halo will know that the marines are saying new wisecacks even on the 4th playthrough. I'd expect HL2 to have that level of variation.

Hehe, what I liked about the scientists was how they huddled over and covered their head every time you broke a box with a crowbar...they also kinda screamed sometimes. That always made me laugh. I wonder if they're still that scared in HL2.

Yeah actually HL2 characters will say something different every time depending on the situation. For example, in the Hydra scene, Alyx isn't gona say "stop starring at me Gordon", but something like "We gota get out of here!" if you talk to her. I'm not sure if it will apply to the "lesser" characters though - i.e. the resistance guys.

In HL1, one of my favorite things was the first time I played, I was on my friend's computer - he introduced me to the game; I actually got a bit further than he had gone already (I played for hours nonstop, he had to work hehe). When I got to the "meatlocker" section, I already had a Barnie following me, then picked up another. As I was loitering there, trying to look around at what to do, the two Barnies amazed us by talking to each other! I can't remember the conversation of course (five years ago, haven't tried it since) but we thought that was just an awesome thing to happen. :)

If you ever played Absolute Redemption, in the second level the russian barney is like:

"Hey catch me later and I will buy you a shot of vodka"

cool i think i had absolute redemption once but i'll have to get it again oh well looks like it's off to searching for me.

I love the random responses the scientists make.
Sci 1: "Do you remember any of those emergency safety proce-"
Sci 2 interupts: "Shut up."
I laughed every time that happened:LOL:
Also, as I type, I'm trying to make a level, with a bunch of scientist and barneys, just to listen to them tell each other to shut up, and ask who ate all the doughnuts.:cheese:

btw: would this map idea work, I'm a n00b map maker.:(

i wonder if you'll overhear combine troops talking to eachother about how they are actually space mutants from planet x. or not.

Absolute Redemption comes on CS retail. Unless you DLed it.[bastage]

Guys Guys Guys (And Gals if Present)

I think we're missing a very important point here:

Where is our damn beer he promised?

its true! i still hear new things to this day, and i've beaten the game at least three times. i love how, after they kill an elite or something, they make a wisecrack and shoot their dead body.

What's also funny is how valve made fun of the limited scientist lines. Scientists say lines such as "Didn't you just say that?" and "You know, you repeat yourself sometimes." It's especially funny when they chatter like that to each other in the background, repeating things and asking "what was that you say?" and the other subsequently repeating themselves as if they understood.

LOL I liked in the hazard course where you had to get Barney to open the door, hold that scientist hostage and get Barney shot by the turrets. They fling comments left and right so fast :p

We have to "catch him later" first, I believe.

I made a short map for practise, 2 scientists stand next to each other...

sci1: Have you seen my glasses (The guy is the kleiner looking sci)
loooong pause
sci2:yeeeeeeees

I laughed :p

I allways thought it was cool when you would attack the scientists and they would scream and cover their heads. Fun for the whole family!

Yes, good times.

Really ahead of it's time, all other games I have played rely on strictly scripted sequences.

Barney1:-I have a baaad feeling about this.
Barney2:-You talk too much.
Barney1:-Hey step off, buddy!
Barney2:-Hey what did i ever do to you??
Barney1:-I just dont know...
Barney2:-You aren't scared, are you?
Barney1:- End of the line for you!
Barney2:- I...I dunno if we should go any further, thi...is doesn't look right.
Barney1:- Ok, we might live longer if we work together.

A small scene from my map, Barney Cloning Center (BCC)

I can't believe you guys would have two barneys at some point of the game, were you guys playing on normal difficulty? I could barely manage to keep one alive for more than two or three minutes before I had to kill him myself for the glock ammo lol :)

The conversation system was very simple - there were a bunch of generic questions and a bunch of generic answers. Some combinations made no sense.

but It did beat just about every other FPS at the time in that it HAD a conversation system.

Yeah. The fact that it was there really did add another layer to these characters. You realised that a lot were just oridinary joes doing what they had to do to get out of it.

Sure it was simple, but for 1998 I think it was pretty damn cool.

Oh yeah, that beer he promised me must be awful warm by now

*cut to Bareny at a bar*

"Been 5 years waiting.....guess he ain't comin"

Youre also a newb JTHM fan.

It's Z? not ?Z

I bet Barney is a barman in Half-Life 2. I'm sure there is still bars running even with an alien invasion. Even if most of the clients are dead. And Barney is fighting alongside Gordon. Ah shut up!

if barney is a main character in hl2 and he dies i'm gonna run into the cornor and cry then come back and get a new one

My favorite was when all hell would break loose in a room full of scientists and only one would be left standing. Quite often his response was "well, there goes our grant money", or "still say there's nothing to chaos theory?" Perhaps the only thing better was when a grunt yelled out "is that all you got?" or "medic!" moments after being gibbed. Valve was very good at making fun of their A.I.'s limitations too - the use of generic quips was very well thought out. If a grunt dropped a granade at his feet (or you dropped it at his feet) he would yell "oh sh*t!" moments before being blown to kingdom come. Amazingly, the clumbsiness of the marines actually added to the game in my opinion.

I really hope Valve keeps the charm of the original intact. I'm sure there will be several humourous references to the original. It would be great if the first time we meet Barney it's in a bar and he's finally buying us that beer!

Yup, make yourself a simple room and populate it with scientists and Barneys. You'll hear a lot of random generic chatter, much of which will actually make sense and some of which will be rather funny. If you choose to do some more advanced stuff, you can make some very funny conversations and situations using basic scripting. The PA announcer is especially fun to play with as you can build your own sentences word by word using the included vocabulary.

Did anyone catch the "easter egg" with the PA system in the training course? At the very end of the course, kill all the barneys and turrets (worry about them one by one so you don't get sliced to pieces by them all at once). Then go over to the security door and keep using the retinal scanner over and over (you have to pause a bit between each use). After about twenty or thirty standard repeating responses from the PA, it starts saying a whole bunch of new things with each press, some of which are pretty darn funny.

I started Half-Life again recently, and the first time you see one of those headcrab zombies, Barney begins to shoot it. I didn't make it in time with my crowbar, and the zombie killed Barney. Then I crowbarred the zombie, and the dead Barney on the ground starts flapping his lips and says, "What are these things and why are they wearing science team uniforms" and then goes back to his lifeless expression. Strange :-?

Made a small map, just for fun

Some Marines, some barneys, and some scientists... god mode is a must :p

How do I get that map to work????
Sorry for the n00b question but I have actually never modified the original HL. I just d/l mods like DoD, CS, TFC etc etc.

Let me rephrase the question, where in my HL folder do I need to unzip it to? Sierra/Half-Life????
How to I start the map up once it's there?

In the maps directory.

To start a game create a Lan game and simply select the map from the list. If it's not on the list then you haven't copied it to the right folder.

You can also use console commands to load the map: "map mapname" easy huh? :)

unzip it to

x:\...\half-life\valve\maps\

then start hl, console, and write "Map Mapname"

I think the "oh SH*T" line from the marines was the best done. It was so loud yet garbled by the radio, it was so satisfying.
