I bought a brand new legit copy of Half life game of the year edition from game for £30 from Game and i put it into my laptop, and nothing happens. I click on my computer and try to go into the dvd drive but it says there is no DVD inserted. This is stupid. I then insert FEAR, Quake 4 dvds and they autorun perfectly and i can access all the files on the DVD, but when i put in half life 2 the damn CD doesnt even run.

There are no scratches on the DVD, tried cleaning, tried rebooting... :frown:

*EDIT* the title shud say half life dvd rom doesnt work

If you have Steam installed, just activate your cd-key.

umm if its hl1 just enter the cd key and dl it the game isnt that big

2) Create an account
3) Download Half-Life 2 via Steam (might take a while)
4) Activate Half-Life 2 with your cd-key from your DVD

i havent downloaded the half life 2 (and wont if it costs money), but if its free, how can i get it through steam?

thanks again guys, much apreciated replies

can you explore all the files like you can on the other cds? if you cant then you might want to get a return

when i enter the CD, i click on the dvd icon but i dont see any files, but when i put in my fear dvd, or quake then i can see all the files and its easily read. Its a brand new copy of half life 2 which means it must be something to do with my Dvd drive?? I have uninstalled starforce drivers about 5 mins ago

i dont know if im allowed to ask this here, but im desperate to play. Is it possible to download a warez copy from the internet and then use my retail serial key to play CS, deathmatch, half life 2 etc. ??

No, you can't.

Just "Pre-load" Half-Life 2 via Steam. Won't cost you a penny.

Basically, you can download any games you want on Steam even though you haven't bought the games yet. All you need is your retail serial key. That's it. Lots of people did this back where the game was released. They bought a retail serial key via Steam and just activate the pre-load game.

Now, we have told you everything you need to know. Don't come back with "I haven't downloaded the game yet but I don't know what to do". Try this first, then come again if something bothers you.

ok, thanks, what i want to know is how to download the half life 2 file? I basically want to play the CS source really.. and im at this screen, where do i go from here to reach the download page (ive tried browse games but u have to pay)

I'm really not sure, because I bought the retail version. But I think you can go directly on My Games, right-click on Counter-Strike: Source (or whatever games you want first) to view the options. There may have an option like "Pre-load" or "Install games...". Try this.

unfortunately these are the only games listed on "My Games",

Try this, then:

On the top bar of the window, next to View and Help, click on Games, then Activate a product on Steam... Follow the instructions.

this is what i get when i do what u said, entered the code and this:

Stop trying to get the guy to go via Steam. If you buy Via retail you have to use the DVD to authenticate. Your only option is to get another copy of the DVD, a working one, or alternatively, find a computer where the DVD works, if such a machine exists.

1. If your friends have the game, their DVDs should work in place of yours (though probably only if they have the GOTY edition). Alternatively you could try and get a replacement disc from the retailer, provided you have the relevant materials, but be warned, because of Steam they can be a bit reluctant to do this (though it shouldn't be too much of a problem as you're asking for a replacement rather than a refund.)

2. If the DVD magically works in another DVD drive on another machine, you can go through the steam process on that machine Making sure you're using YOUR Steam account, inputting the CD-Key and then popping the disc in when prompted. Once the Disc verification is completed, you will never have to do it again and can always download the game through Steam from then on. Burn yourself a backup through Steam so you don't have to go through the download again.

Edit: so basically, it doesn't matter which HL2 Goty disc you use, or the machine you use it on, so long as you're connected to your Steam account.
Edit 2: I assume the one off "CD-Key needs CD to authenticate" rule is to stop people from just taking a peek at the cd-keys on the shelves of their local retailer and taking the key alone home and downloading themselves a free game. Not entirely failsafe though if ANY disc will work...

oh thankkkkkkkkkkk you no.2 was a great idea. actually i just tested the DVD on my other laptop and it works fine, so ill install it there, authenticate and then come back to this laptop and pre-load the game :) It might take a while, but this game will be worth it, ya know? Thanks kupo! (love FF too), and thanks anti anto for trying to help. :)
