CD Keys on eBay

Does anyone know if these are legit, or a ripoff?
I have Steam and the HL2 demo installed, and if I click on "register a product I already own" it promts me to enter the key.
If I buy one of these, a CD key only, will I be able to download all the needed game files or do I need the disks to install and play?

They're mostly generated by a key-generator, fake or already being used by someone.

Don't do it. Firstly if it doesn't work then you're out of pocket, secondly if it does work - the chances are that Valve will ban your whole Steam account (blocking you out of games you've bought from the shop such as Half-Life 1 etc.) and it generally gets very messy.

Just buy it on your credit card through Steam :)

Thank you for the reply, Chris_D, and for the heads up. I will be sure to wait and get the full copy.
As a side note, I asked the very same question at the planet half-life forums and the reply I got was from an admin who called me an idiot, locked the thread, and banned me from the forums all within a few minutes of posting(my first post on their forums).
Well good riddance I like it here better anyway!

That sounds a bit harsh, what was the admin's name?

I'd like to go with what Chris said.

NEVER buy any sort of CD-Key over EBay... Such as I never buy any games which require a CD Key to play online (well unless its a really really old game which probably wouldn't matter if you could play online or not) because what people do is, they open the box very carefully (peel the sticker off the top) and then look for the CD Key, register it to their name, then put it all back, put the sticker back on and put it on EBay.... So thus they sell it to people claiming it's new and really they are just getting screwed over...

It is always good practice to never buy any cdkey related program off of any auction site, many bad things could happen..... Just buy it from the store and you will never have to worry again! :)

*edit* Oh and yes that sounds like a really bad job of admin'ing... Although I must say they have been very unreliable in the past few months, not very good job :\ Different story though, I don't want to drag this off-topic

So in conclusion buy products you have to register from stores and off steam only :) I suggest off of steam so you know that you won't get screwed, and you support valve with more money of your purchase going to valve :)

Is this the thread?

Looks like the admin edited your post about the rules.

Well anyhow I would avoid buying cdkeys off of ebay. The people selling them may claim they are not used or legit, but if I were you I would just go the legal way and avoid the mess. Like chrisD said, if your steam account is banned and you had alot games bought, your screwed!

PlanetHalfLife Forum Rules said:
No porn. No warez material or discussion, which includes asking for CD cracks, Keys or generators
This is the only thing I can find that might have been the reason for them banning you, but let's be honest here: You did not ask for CD cracks, keys or generators and you didn't discuss warez material.

We disallow discussions on warez here, but ffs - you were asking legitimately for advice.

Write an e-mail to [email protected], he might be able to sort it out for you.

I know people that have bought keys off eBay, and they worked just fine. They also worked online, which means they werent made with a keygen.

But yeah, it's probably not worth the risk anyway.

You know, I've been a semi-nerd for a good 2 years and I still haven't managed to figure that one out...

Oh, and I have the X800 XT PE, it's amazing, but you might want to wait for the X850.

warez is the illegal download and use of software that you do not legally own

Such as getting cracks off the internet for HL2 and all, that is considered warez because you are using something you don't own (in this case HL2)

wtf is with the talk of the x800s though jnightshade? lol randomness

i wonder why those warez guys seemed to always cloak themselves from the law...or is the law involved :D

Ive heard of people buying legitamite (spelling?) cd keys from ebay, never tryed so myself thoe, wouldnt recommend you trying it
