My mum and sis have moved out to the states ahead of me and they've bought some "cell phones" just recently. The problem is everytime someone calls them they get charged for the call?? WTF is that all about?

Is this just a con or is this how the system is over there?
There thinking of taking the phones back and bitching lol

If this is how the system is, oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.

Thats because the phone companies assume tha tthe person calling doesn't know that they are in another country and that it is not fair that that person should pay more, so they charge them for the extra money that international calls cost, if they would take a look in the little manuels that came with the phone of the telefoon company they would know it.
If you ask me a phone company should inform someone when he is calling someone who is in a foreign country that the phone call is going to cost more, and let them chose to accept it or not.

International calls? No one has called them from another country.

Well you said that they have moved out of the states, now if people in the states call someone out of the states that is an international call, even if someoen calls them in the country they are in now it still goes via the states. Hey but if you wanna more info go to the site of the telecom company, or ask your mom or sister to check their telecom companies manuel.

lol no they've moved out TO the states and bought cell phones there but they are getting charged when someone like her sister (lives in the same country, state and area) calls.

Yes, I believe that's most likely how the system works over there (with cell phones),...dunno why though..don't see the logic in it.

Thats true, there was a big deal about it with people going abroad and finding themselves charged a fortune for calls on mobiles.

Phones suck anyway.

It depends on the phone plan.

If they got an unlimited plan, then no, it shouldn't cost anything, but if they have a plan thats based on minutes, which a large amount are, once you go over the allocated minutes it does charge you.

its just impossible to know without knowing what plan they are on.

There on a pay as you go, dunno what network they are with.

USA is a HUUUGEE country, its not really fair to expect them to provide the same charging structure as in Europe. They have to build many more transmitters than we do to cover their population.

Anyway, Vodafone 3G has been launched today! YAY!

Still don't understand the need to pay for a phone call someone else made to your phone?? lol

Because you're using minutes on their sattelite weather you make the call or not

No in the UK if someone calls your cell phone they pay for the call, if you call someone on your cell phone you pay for the call. Simple really.

I always thought that was wierd too. But I still have a Cell. :p
Depending on the provider and the plan, they can allow you to call other people using the same provider without using minutes, like Verizon's friends and family plans.

Yea I think when I go i'll just get a contract phone, bound to be cheaper.

They might have been roaming on another network within the country. That network will impose charges on the person roaming.

When I travel abroad, and somebody from England phones me, I pay for that incoming call, usually about 50p a minute. If somebody in the same foreign country as me calls me, I still pay for the incoming call!

Sucks, but what can you do?

Yeah, it is the same system in China as well. If someone puts a call through to yourmobile phone, you have to pay as well. A lower rate than if you initiated the call, but you still have to pay.

I was really surprised when I first found that out. In Australia, it is the same as the UK. I can receive 20 hours of calls a day and not pay a cent for it.
