CES 2007: John Carmack And Todd Hollenshead Speak

"it’s not just a first-person shooter."

Thats my favorite part. :)

I agree with what they said about Steam. The idea was that it should cut out the middle man, giving customers cheaper prices and developers bigger cuts. Well what it really did was just absorb the middle man into Valve. The prices aren't much better, at least not for Valves games, and they take just as big of a cut as a retail publisher, which is ridiculous. And you don't even get a boxed copy.

Steam did so much more tho. They gave small developers even a chance for their games.

Most of the games on steam would have never made it to 10% of the people they did. Not to mention some never getting released.

Id needs to stop making new games and ****ing get DUKE NUKEM DONE FFS!!!!!

oops. I flubbed. lol, for some reason, I think Id and Doom, and it just sorta leaps to Duke Nukem.

Yea huge difference lol... id can actually finish games they start!

Personally, I'm not that excited for the game which they are making but rather the technology... I'm sure the game will still be cool, but I love the things which John Carmack comes up with... Ugly code, but still pure genius in the way he does things.

They do make some amazing tech. I wouldnt say the best looking but they come up with some cool looks.

I say it's about time we had another horror action thriller like FEAR etc to look forward too, something that pushes the boundaries when it comes to scaring the shit out of the player.

You know something that really makes the hairs on the back of your kneck stand up one moment and then has you physically in a sweat the next, doesn't have to be a pure fps either.. I just really enjoy any game with that kindof mechanic if it's done well.

Its highly debatable as to whether that game was actually as scary as it was intended to be, because of the scares in FEAR offer no actual harm to the player, unlike....pretty much other horror game there is.

Games like Silent Hill 2, System Shock 2 and Thief 3 know how to scare players, but FEAR failed pretty bad.

Also, that was a good interview.

Yeh I guess certain people were susceptable to FEAR's scare tactics, they seemed to be the ones who enjoyed it the most. But you know what I mean something to look forward too that ups the anti.

A next gen poo your pants game if you will.

Perhaps, but that doesn't look all that scary, just freaky. We shall see, hopefully a prominent developer has something ambitious in the works.

You've never played System Shock 2 have you?
There's a reason why System Shock 2 is considered one of the scariest games ever made, you know.

FEAR had awful horror segments. None of them were scary; they were just boring corridor romps in-between the cool firefights.

I agree with what Iced said.

FEAR didn't push anything. :p

Interesting interview.
