Okay so my Half Life 2 seems to not be able to run since I switched Hard Drives. MY old C: is now my D: and I have a completely clean new 150gig C: I can get Counterstrike, Hl2 DM, Hl2 CTF DM, and stuff to work. But I can't get Plan of Attack or just regular HL2 single player to work.

I just get an error report that just says "hl2.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." So i'm thinking it has something to do with it looking in the wrong registry or something that used to be under a C: file pathname and is now under D: but I can't figure out what.

So how can I go about fixing this without having to re-steam download HL2 again?

Go to this folder:
C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\ or
C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps

In there you will see several files ending in .gcf. These are the important ones. Copy them over to a folder on your new HDD. Call the folder SourceApps. You may also want to include the SourceMods folder.

Once they're copied, uninstall Steam from your Add/Remove Programs window. Download the Steam client (only 600kb) and install it to X:\Program Files\Steam\ (X:\ being the letter of your new drive).

Let it update (only takes a few minutes) and then log in with your existing account. When you get back in Steam will start downloading something. Again, it only takes a few seconds. When it's done, close Steam and get that SourceApps folder you copied earlier.

Highlight it and press Ctrl + X (to cut it). Then go into your Steam folder and paste it in there. It will give you a warning about overwriting files with the same name. Say ok.

Relaunch Steam and all your games are installed and all of them will work without any registry errors :)

Hmm odd I tried that and the new steam says i have NONE of the stuff, the old one still shows up with the others.

So right now I have this

(steamapps is the only folder under steam)

C:/Programfiles/Steam/Steamapps

which has only all the GCF files

then

D:\ProgramFiles\Steam\SteamApps

(steam apps is NOT the only folder)

with all the GCF files, as well as my email address folder, and a sourcemods folder.

According to the microsoft error report thing all it tells me is that the problem is with HL2.exe

Due to this I also can't get things like the mod Plan of Attack to work either, it says the same problem with hl2.exe.

Which is odd, because I can still run CounterStrike:Source, HL2: DM, and Halflife2 CTF mods

you could just swap the drive letters again.... :upstare:

Well it was a little more complicated then that. What happened was we got some "Dr somebodies post mortem debugger" error that kept popping up and i couldn't open any of my folders at all, but could still click on exe files and stuff on my desktop when it occured. So after awhile we found out it was a motherboard problem, and a windows xp problem. So we couldn't delete/take out windows XP on the original C: (now D: ) so we did the only thing we could think of, and we loaded XP onto the new C: and made the other the slave. Now using the C: as the original i'm capable of going into my D: again and opening the folders / accessing files, but i just can't get it to work.

I may just try redownloading it all together. But can you do that? Can you download it HL2 again without having to pay ANOTHER $50? I know they had that little "make a cd" button on steam or whatever, but can you do it?

Yes, you may download any valve game you own through steam as many times as you like, for free.

I did it not a month ago. Formatted my PC, set steam downloading, went to bed, got up and the entire silver package is sat on my PC. Bargain :)

haha...so much for my idea. but yeah you can delete it all and just install steam on the new drive and log in...it will download everything you own

i re downloaded steam and steam games and i still get the error : (

my freind also cant play steam games...

i think something is rong with steam downloads
