I'm extremely curious on character conversations, for example: When Gordon is in the apartment building and is walking by a few rooms, you can hear a lady and man's conversation along the lines of "what are we gonna do" etc. I wonder what they will do if we go into their room and stand next to them. Or if you just chill outside to see what else they talk about.

I hate it when characters will have a conversation in a game and then at the end of the scripted words there is silence and they just stare at each other.
I was playing the thief:deadly shadow's demo and thats exactly what these two characters did.

It would be bad a$$ if they had a huge variation of sentences and also would get up a possibly use the bathroom/get some food/tell us to get the funk out of their room, etc.

If Hl2 fulfills those wishes then I will donate my right nut:)

Half-Life 2 will probably have some kind of generic statements the AI will say if you are near them like 'What are you doing here?' 'Who are you?' if you would approach them after some scripted conversation.

Yeah, i agree with Dedatorv. But in the case of the 2 people talking in their apartment, i think after their conversation is done, they will just say/do random stuff, and yeah maybe going to the bathroom or getting food will be in that list of random stuff. But the random stuff will probably have nothing to do with the original stuff they said, so it may make no sense or seem cheesy, if you know what i mean...

Guess there'll be some random stuff they say, and in battle the allies report their status.

Yeah, I'd love to see that kind of detail in the game; even if it isn't, people could mod it fairly well. Hang around too long in a place? An irate speaker shoves you outside Combine style, and then locks the door. People don't talk if you walk in on them, or they change their conversation if you do... it'd be good to see that.

In the original Half-Life, if you met Barney or one of the scientists they would speak to you and carry on saying random bits of dialogue at you. Same if two NPCs in HL1 were together they would actually have a conversation. Obviously back in the day they didn't generate the most convincing AI conversation but I assume it'll flow a lot more in Half-Life 2.

Also I remember reading or watching an interview where in some body stated that each time you play the game, conversations you hear will be different. For example in the video we saw them say "What are we going to do?". The next time you play the game they may say, "I see they've bust into Appartment 24".

In terms of interrupting the sequences... In Kleiners Lab in 2003 we saw that if you knock that monitor over Kleiner turns around to you and says something. I imagine there will be lots of other interruptions we can have on all different sorts of conversations.

They might not mind you walking into their apartment, but lets say you picked up a chair and put it outside, they may interrupt their dialogue to tell you off or actually go outside and put it back.

Just a question...I have played Half-life myself...but who is Barney?? Where do you meet him?

He's the security guards.

I always liked that about the original half life. Played abit of it today to remind myself actually :) goodstuff! I'm sure they can only expand on that in half life 2. People will acknowledge your presence if nothing else, I don't always have something to say either, all NPCs should be given books or something. ooh idea. uncomfortable silence, get out your handy paperback and avoid eye contact.

barney is the name given to the generic security guards that aid you in the game :)

edit: to slow, please excuse my newness :(

Sigh... Barney is the security guard. You see him everywhere, but he is not 'supposed' to be the same person.
However, in HL2 he will be one character. Valve says that "everyone will be different".

But Chris, the idea of being able to do anything, and having the NPC's react to you is just the coolest thing I have ever heard of or will experience. OMG I can't wait. :D

We don't know for definite if that'll turn out to be true but it's what we've seen in Kleiners lab at least.

EDIT: Also I had a chuckle at your sig vegeta.

Characters will also moderate how much they say to you depend on what style you're playing the game in. If you're just rushing through everything, they'll only give you the barebones of the message, no details. However, if you're playing a very slow, detail-assertive game, they'll tell you everything and carry on conversing with you!

Is that actually true or were you being sarcastic?

I'm far too used to sarcasm...

I want to hear every god damn word they have to say!!!!! :D

I am going to get at least 100 hours gameplay out of this game even if it kills me.

I think I'll bind a button to "kill" just so I can suicide over and over so I can do the same bits over and over again.

Right on!
Possiblities!
But I think Quickload would be a little more pleasant. ;)

(yay was being sarcastic~)

If there are things u gotta do within a scene, like push buttons or pickup stuff or whatever, if you went straight into the room completely ignored them and pushed the button or picked up the item, they would cut to the chase and deliver a shorter dialogue.

All the individual scenes are branched like that, also deals with events like disturbing the enviroment (monitor in kleiners lab) or hanging around doing nothing, stuff like that.

Dunno about the more generic charecters but the tenament scene definitly seems to have some scene work done, the guy at the window for instance.

Yeah I got that :) That's why it's funny :D I'm one of the unlucky buggers that's had to close and delete threads that link to that so very new news.

And you know that I knew you were being sarcastic right?
T'was funny because you posted it in a thread that was about another very old news thing.

So the idea of the quote is to say "nice post" *Applause*

It almost sounds like HL2 would be better if they made it a full on RPG.

Now that would be interesting....it would be neat if done well.

Yep, but however, there are a few 'slow' that did not get my humor :(

OMG .. how many times are people gonna post this bloody mod?

this is like the 8th time this week...

In response to my post~

im looking forward to the character interaction. it seems valve really took it to a whole new level after seeing everyones reactions to barney and the scientists in the original.

I remember playing HL and trying to get as many NPC's in close proximity as I could(max I could do was 4). I'd spend half an hour just standing there listening to the conversations they'd come up with. Needless to say, I too will be getting atleast 100 hours of gameplay out of HL2.

As others said, "barney" is the generic name given to the security guards in HL2.

However, one guard SPECIFICALLY NAMED "Barney Calhoun" was the character in Blue Shift, and he's the same one in HL2 (we don't know how he got their yet, like Kleiner and stuff)

I hope Valve could afford to make the voiceactors say all those lines...
But otherwise Crytek probably has some cheap voiceactors they can use... hopefully the civilians won't go "I'M GONNA SHOOT YOU IN THE FACE"...

Noway. That's a bit too advanced isn't it? I've seen the combine kick open doors and zombies kicking barrels but picking up a chair! I'll be amazed if they can.

That just made me ralise how early into the development of games we are. Man, I'd love to see a game from 50 years into the future. Just think of the AI, the graphics, THE POSSIBILITIES!!! :afro:

He meant if *you* picked up the chair and put it outside, not an NPC.

lol

"I'VE GOT A BULLET WITH YOUR NAME ON IT"

*NPC gets shot in the head and falls to the ground*

"WHOA ARE YOU OK?!"

Obviously, after seeing the clone army of Eli, Barney and Kleiner what did you expect, to use the same faces?

I'm happy to hear that at a time no two NPCs will look the same. True, you'll meet clones of them in different levels with little variation, but it's good to know that your fighting with people who have their identities.

Actually he wasn't. We know that you can pick up the chair, but one of the things he said the NPC would do is put it back.

And this is possible and is in the game according to Valve. :)

*jaw drops*

nah, valve can't male it THAT immersive...or could they?

Look in some interviews.
In one they said, regarding people who don't realize there are physical objects in the game, "(Not exact) You will see NPC's using the physics, and realize that you too can do these things"

I am really impressed.

And Valve wouldn't lie about this.

Oh my bad, misread it. Thought he meant that the NPC would just tell you to put it back.

Wow... *me starts drooling massive amounts* PLEASE I HOPE THIS IS TRUE AND THEY CAN DO ALL THAT
