Character Map Boxes Problem

Well sorry to be a n00b but after i reformmated my computer, the character map characters would not work like before. Im getting squares. Is this because my chinese character program was uninstalled?

Please help me. And you shall be greatly rewarded.

Did you make sure to install support for east asian character sets during the windows install? If not control panel - language options - langauges - install support for east asian. I'm running most progs in Japanese so my \s come out as the yen sign, fun stuff.
