I'd make this a poll, but it doesn't really work due to more than 10 options.

So...

Do you use any cheat codes or console commands in "normal" gameplay?

I suppose I'm one of the few casual gamers who play HL, so I generally keep the console on in-game. I generally use the following cheat codes:

"hurtme" whenever there's health or suit powerups in an area that I'm not able to return to.
"noclip" in Black Mesa East, in order to slam-dunk Dog's ball on the scrapyard basket.
"buddha" just before NLO; activate it, wade into the water so the leeches eat me, then turn it off after entering NLO with 1 hitpoint.
"god" so that I can jump off the lighthouse without dying. (Screw the stairs!)

And in episode 1, I spawn poison zombies or antlion guards on the ring by the broken reactor, where they are instantly vaporised. I'm a monster and I'm going straight to hell.

Not for shortcuts like that, but after I've played through a game a few times normally and later want to screw around, noclipping, god mode, and all weapons+ammo is worth another playthrough.

I don't think I've ever cheated in Half-Life 2. I save it all for Garry's Mod.

I've not cheated to make the game easier, but i have to make it harder. For the final battle in Episode 2 i spawned loads of Combine Soldiers and Zombies that made it alot more interesting.

Host_timescale 0.5 ftw. Also video setting could end up with funny effect.

If I'm just messing around, I do. If I'm playing seriously, I don't.

Although, I have made some changes to the skill.cfg: I increased slightly the carrying capacity for some types of ammunition--

.357 - 12 > 18
AR2 - 60 > 120
Grenade - 5 > 10

--because it frustrates me coming across .357 ammo I can't use and it makes no sense that you can carry so little, same for the AR2.

I also made zombie's attacks and the Combine Soldiers' rifle butt melee attacks do a bit more damage, and I tweaked some values called "damage adjusters" which determine how much damage is taken from hits to different body parts.

These are the defaults:
Code:
// NPC damage adjusters
sk_npc_head "3"
sk_npc_chest	"1"
sk_npc_stomach	"1"
sk_npc_arm "1"
sk_npc_leg "1"

As you can see, by default, shooting a Combine Soldier in the chest does no more damage than shooting him in the foot. These are my modifications:
Code:
// NPC damage adjusters
sk_npc_head "3.3"
sk_npc_chest	"1.1"
sk_npc_stomach	"1"
sk_npc_arm "0.8"
sk_npc_leg "0.8"
Whether this kind of stuff can be considered cheating is open to intepretation, but I don't think so. Since I took one point away from the limbs for every one I added elsewhere, the net effect is the game now rewards good marksmanship more than normal.

Those changes alter game balance slightly, but I think they're pretty well balanced. The ability to carry more ammunition for a few weapons has little effect on the actual difficulty of combat.

i used to use buddha, but i dont anymore. im completely against cheating now.

What in the hell is the point of this?

The medkits must not go to waste! If I don't use them, then... err... someone else well, I suppose?

You can't bring the wall-mounted ones with you, and if you can't return to the area anyway...

Hm, if I don't have very much time and don't want to start a "serious" game that'll suck me in, I turn on buddha mode, turn the max 357 ammo up to something ridiculous, give myself as much of it as I can, then play through Ravenholm using the Annabelle. Laughing maniacally like Grigori is optional.

If I still have time, I activate ye old impulse #83 and try to play through Highway 17 using the airboat instead of the car, just for giggles.

Efforts to play through Water Hazard using the car were unsuccessful due to a large amount of water.

Like.. who? Even if other people could use them, that would be a good thing. Like resistance fighters. You're going to hurt yourself just to waste a medkit when it could have helped a resistance fighter?

But it has no point. It's a waste of time.

I really hope you're messing with me. Maybe you have OCD or something.

Vegeta I did the same thing, taking fall damagae or something to get -every- health kit.

Though I call it OCD, meself.

I do that with rare ammunition. If I find a Pulse Rifle energy core or some .357 Magnum rounds that I can't use I go and find something worth using them on, then go back and pick them up. Well, okay, that's not quite the same thing, I don't just shoot walls to waste the ammunition.

With other supplies I do the opposite thing. If I come across something I can't use in some isolated supply cache I typically reposition it so anyone who might come through later will see it. >_>
