It's me again :)

I was just looking at the lastest e-mails in the Valve info thread, and I noticed that in ark_angel's e-mail to Rick Ellis, he asked if the HL2 Benchmark was coming out any time soon, and Rick replied:

"...As for the benchmark, check with Doug Lombardi after E3 for more details."

To me, that means that at E3, Valve will be lifting their wall of silence, and we'll finally be able to get this ball rolling.

I'm so excited for this game. Ow, i just popped a blood vessel.

Doug Lombadi isnt really an offical source anymore, more like a distraction so valve can sneak out the back door.

Yeah, I don't much trust anything Lombardi says after his insisting a week before September 30 that Half-Life 2 was still on schedule.

Ah srew it, it seems fairly obvious somehting big is going down at E3 checking around shows they have a bigger booth, Gabe didn't make a big deal out of the GDC they have been saving up all their energy, they have to achieve at this E3. If they don't provide results then the company is going to be in dire straits after previous debacles e.g TF2. They won't be putting space onto DS CZ because it's out, they won't be showing non source related material because it's practically their whole company in a programme.

I agree we are going to have some results start showing up...ahahhaa excitment hurts me

Sure, Lombardi has no believability anymore, but didn't we already know that they'd have more info out by e3? I mean, there is supposedly a magazine out this WEEK with new info, right?

This does definately confirm that we won't be seeing HL2 until after e3.

but we were never going to! for ages its been stated that they aren' saying anything until E3, but this can only be a good thing because it is an event! whats a better way to kick this game off.

i definitely think e3 will be mega. for starters, they need to come out big and stir up a lot of hype, because i assume theyll release info concerning not only the sdk, but also the benchmark. then well know the game being announced going gold wont be too long after that. this is a very good time for us i think.

I just hope we can get this thing kicked off today or tomorrow with new mag stuff.

I remember what happened after the last E3 , I refuse to believe this game is ever coming out until its gone gold.

I don't know, I think we will see multyplayer on this E3.

I didn't post this to say "ooh! doug lombardi is going to tell us something after E3!!!

Nobody trusts doug anymore. I posted it because it is the first time Rick Ellis acknowleged that information will be more freely available after E3. just a vote of confidence that Half-Life 2 hasn't just been one huge hoax all along.

Check with Doug? That's like saying "I'll let Doug do the lying".

HL2 doesn't exist. I have proof.

..wait, no I don't :( Reminds me of that thread at steampowered.com, where the guy rambled on and on how VALVe sucks, HL2 doesn't exist, blah blah blah.. good times (this was only 2 days ago.. excuse me for reliving the recent past :()

Ahh... don't be so hard on doug, he is probably doing his job... maby he should start with politics when he don't wan't too be a part of the gamingindustry anymore :p

Nixon Uber Alles!

We shall know way more after E3, i for one am sooo goddamn excited about that event. Pity im travelling China so won't know whats happening.

To me, that means the SDK (which will be out before the game's release) won't even be available by the time E3 rolls around. Which means HL2's release is way after E3.

I guess this is why I never got an answer for my e-mail about benchmark release relative to HL2 release.

Find me the quote.

Feath, it's common knowledge Doug was pushing Sept. 30th 6 days before the date.

In the same way that it's common knowledge that if you throw rice at weddings, birds eats it, and they swell up and their stomach explodes?

Or the same was that if you leave a tooth in a class of coke overnight, it will have dissolved when you wake up?

If it's that common knowledge, find me the quote. Just because 6 days before 30th of September he said "The game has been delayed", doesn't mean that he was "Pushing Sept. 30th" until that game.

PC zone.

about 6 days before sept 30th.

Zone: So the 30th?
Doug: yes.

Zone: sure?
Doug: yip.

Zone: sept 30th?
Doug: yes....

Zone: absolutely sure?
Doug: it didnt change from the last 3 times you asked me.

all in 1 preview in the exact same paragraph.

Not that I disagree with you that Valve insisted 9/30 till the end, but magazines can often be a bit slow so that interview could easily have been taken in the start of september.

I think you'd better go back to school. That interview took place on London Games week which was a month before the 30th of September. So your maths is a little bit off.

me.optimistic()

PC zone will have new screenshots and will have played HL2 recently (and will be astounded at how it is even better than the last time they played it)

Valve will show some new stunningly good HL2 videos, will set an official release date and will release the SDK at E3

Valve will also please people with the announcement that TF2 is part of HL2's multiplayer

This will happen.....

hopefully

They have said before TF2 is its own game, so it won't be HL2's mp, I am looking @ hl2 being coop and having DM. :naughty:

Can't really imagine what Valve is going to offer in terms of HL2 multiplayer that will hold a candle to the brilliance that is Unreal Tounrament 2004.

well my impression about the email i got was that rick basically said doug is vavles pr guy he'll release the press release when they've got code that is ready to go gold which will be after e3 according to rick.

the mag came out 6 days before the 30th (in scotland).

the mods?

it was the mods that made HL big... not HL (alone) as a game...

Actually, it was Valve's own Team Fortress Classic that really put Half-Life on the multiplayer map.

Well, the didn't do the interview that day, did they? It was a month before.

..is only the modeling tools, not the SDK

Modeling tools are supposed to be phase 1 on the SDK release.

the thing is that only modlers can work now, map creators and such just still have to wait.

It'd be nice to see tf2 getting shown at e3 along with hl2.
couple of questions before i go cynic
-how many years was hl pushed back?
Nm thats all. I remain cynical about release dates when TF2 was supposed to be further along than having 4 year old screenshots as proof of progress. I'm a little sad about that.

Oh, and I don't believe I can swallow the next release date because hl went through many, and I do remember that with less than 3 weeks left to go gold, Mr. L said the game was on track.

Now you think you can pump out the game within a month, is it weird to be off by over 4 months? Maybe they just decided for E3 to roll around before announcing date, working on game till then. I dunno. Speculation and hindsight are bad

I believe Half-Life was delayed a year. As the story goes, Valve had finished the game, pressed the gold master, and was almost ready to ship before they came to their senses and realized they had created a very ordinary game. So they took all the cool bits throughout the entire game and put them in a single level, played it, and said, "Now if we can keep that up for an entire game then we'll have something." So they essentially scrapped everything they had done and started from scratch. The fruit of their labor is the classic Half-Life.

Now this time around, I don't think Valve redid everything from scratch, but it's clear they didn't feel confident they would be able to ship the absolute best game on September 30, 2003.

Mountain, I think something similar happened. Like you said, I doubt they re-did the whole game, but I'm willing to bet they went through it with a sharply critical eye, and really made the game shine.

EDIT: Hmmm... no /me tags.
