Anyone else here a fan of ambient chillout music?

I've noticed that people hearing some of it tend to like it quickly due to most popular tracks being incredibly well made and inspiring.

I find myself regularly listening to www.di.fm's chillout radio station: http://www.di.fm/mp3/chillout.pls

Some of the chillout DJ's make absolutely amazing compilations/mixes of the better tracks, http://www.trance.se/rebel9/ has all his mixes as downloadable mp3, I highly recommend "The Elysian Fields" and "Voices of Eden".

www.djriver.com is another outstanding DJ, his 4th mix was made with the late 2004 tsunami victims in mind, which shows.

I listen to the "Groove Salad" station on iTunes.

Fila Brazillia and most of BoC's "Music Has The Right To Children" is stuff I can mellow out to. Same with "Selected Ambient Works Vol. 1" by Aphex Twin.

But if I want something really ethereal (or trippy, strange, fascinating if on a mind-altering substance), "Selected Ambient Works Vol. 2" hits the spot.

ADDED: Oh yeah, Between Interval has some really great stuff as well.

I ****in' love ambient. I don't know a whole lot of artists but just in general I love it. Aphex Twin especially.

Absinthe: Yeah, I used to listen to Filla Brazillia some time ago, maybe I should try and see if I can find any of their work again. They made the song "President Chimp Toe", right?

BoC is just genius. I don't know what they do to their music that creates immense feelings of nostalgia and sentimentality.

And yeah, it'd pretty much be blasphemy not to agree on the awesomeness of Aphex Twin. His ambient stuff, heck, everything he's ever made, is simple yet amazing and powerful.

Sadly, the internet is the only place where I can find similar minds when it comes to music tastes.

Everybody in the real world thinks I'm crazy. :P

I agree.

Though don't you go to NC State now? I live in Durham so that's really not too far

Yeah, I do. But when I say the real world, I mean my immediate surroundings.

Take most people around here for instance. It's either "****IN' NU METAL ON REPEAT, MAN" or they're singing Amazing Grace and a wide variety of country hits. And I'm being generous when I use the word "variety", because it really all sounds the same. Some warbling cowboy talking about his pick-up truck or some shit, with that sad and lonely detuned guitar pluck thrown in every once and a while. I equate that noise specifically with that of a calf that's been chucked onto an electric fence and has been left to die.

Hell, I used to have mostly European friends! You'd think that there'd be more open minds when it comes to this stuff. But no! They think it's noise!

any luck with the drug scene there?

I know where to go and who to ask, but I've not really made an attempt yet.

...My, this went off topic rather quickly!

I'm not a fan of the Genre itself, but there are a few songs I consider extremely easy going and just put me in a good mood while they're playing.

Pink Floyd- Time

Oh god, don't get me started on this song. It just blows me away. It puts me in a whole new realm, it's so mesmerizing. It's like a natural high.

Led Zeppelin- Houses of the Holy

Ok, this ones just plain funky. I love the guitar riffs in this one. Really gets me in a good mood. I just start bobbing my head.

Cream- World of Pain

Not one of my favorite songs by them, but it's so easy going that I just love to hear it. A just plain ambient song.

Yeah, it's not the same as just "ambient" music, but it's my sort of ambient music.

EDIT: And yeah, everybody thinks i'm an idiot or a fag for liking the kinda music I like. Is there anything wrong with a 13 year old liking Led Zeppelin, Cream, and The Who? I just have better taste in music then them, but they consistently put me down because of my music taste.

Yeh, ambient sound in a song is something i like, but i dont like ambient/ chillout music specifically.
I could not recommend 'Calla' enough to someone who likes to chill out out to relaxing alternative pop/rock tunes. Their album 'televise' is extremely good, but 'scavenger' s far more ambient and relaxing- excellent stuff.

Aphex Twin FTW. Here are some good chillout tracks you MUST download:

Nightmare on Wax - Les Nuit <--------- MUST DOWNLOAD!
DJ Shadow - Long Stem (187 Soundtrack)
Air - All I need
Zero 7 - In the waiting line
Massive Attack - Tear Drop
Pete Tong - Chase the sun

Mostly anything by Blue Tonic World. They were on mp3.com before it got sold, so I'm not sure where else you can download them now, but its awesome chill music.

EDIT: A bunch of his music is available for free DL here: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=342913

Cheers for linky, will listen to them.

Also, Lamb - Gorecki is a great track and anything by Massive Attack.

Please do :D If you're looking for a place to start, "Deeper down the deepest dream" is my fav track from him.

Air are chill out gods. Best track imo: 'La Femme d'Argent' from 'Moon Safari'. I don't really like their vocal work tho (Sexy Boy anyone?).

Thievery Corporation is also relaxed. Some great chill out tracks are 'Rebirth', 'Lebanese Blond' and 'Un Simple Histoire'.

Basically everything from 'The K&D Sessions' by Kruder & Dorfmeister is laid back. Hot summer afternoon music.
