Police hunted Monday for chimpanzees that escaped from a Sierra Leone preserve and mauled a group of American and local sightseers, killing one man and injuring four people.

The U.S. Embassy warned Americans against traveling to the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary, where the chimps escaped before Sunday's attack on a taxicab.

The Sierra Leonean driver died as the chimps ripped his body apart, and three Americans were treated at a hospital for minor injuries, said Oliver Somasa, a top police official.

Another Sierra Leonean man in the group had his hand amputated after the mauling, Somasa said. U.S. officials had no further comment. The Americans were in Sierra Leone to help build a new embassy building, Somasa said.

Armed police were searching Monday for 27 chimpanzees, Somasa said, while four others had already returned on their own accord to the reserve.

Somosa said it was unclear why the chimps attacked

...umm could it be because they're in cages their entire lives? conditions for humans are deplorable in Sierra leon I can imagine how much worse it is for animals

There's an image of chimps being cute and friendly but in reality they are savage, they tear up anything that moves and eat it.

Gorillas are much more peaceful.

Yep. People say we're the only species that kills each other but that's bullshit. Chimpanzees eat babies. Brutality is common to all intelligent species.

I never heard about chimpanzee's being overtly violent or aggressive. Wikipedia doesn't even have one mention of those words. Hrm.

I thought they were omnivores and herbivores anyways.. not violent rampagers.

Thats indeed true. But it's surprising how incredible strong they are, they can be up to 4 times stronger then a human, it's amazing.

That not overly true, Bonobo's are pretty peaceful, and dolphin's are too.

Gorillas are peaceful animals, also Bonobs almost never fight (mainly due to the fact they use sex as a social stregthener)
