...this is just so freakin bizarre:

"A Shanghai online gamer has been given a suspended death sentence for killing a fellow gamer.

Qui Chengwei stabbed Zhu Caoyuan in the chest when he found out he had sold his virtual sword for 7,200 Yuan (£473).

The sword, which Mr Qui had lent to Mr Zhu, was won in the popular online game Legend of Mir 3.

Attempts to take the dispute to the police failed because there is currently no law in China to protect virtual property. "

There are some crazy people out there!

hehe i've never been that attached to anything virtual, like if someone sold my game saves or something...sad tbh...

I found it disturbing that the father said 'we want him to die immediately' referring to the convicted guy, i mean that just sounds horrible.

'if you kill someone here...we will kill you back' good ol Ron White :D

Sad... that's the first thing that came to mind too. It's a damn game!?

Well, it doesn't say whether he stabbed him because he got rid of it, or whether it was because he got just under £500 for it.
I mean, say you lent someone something worth £500, and they sell it. You'd be mad, not that I condone killing someone.
If he killed him because he was that attached to it. Well... :|

When I first read this, I thought it meant he was jailed for stabbing someone in the game...

This is pretty crazy though, another bit of ammo for the censorship bastards.

i'm pretty sure there is more to it, the guy disrespected other guy, maybe made fun of him, wasn't his freiend in the first place, but i'm not justufing, i'm just saying it's not all about the sword, more about respect and integrity (sort of like shooting in Colombine)

It isn't the sword that the man killed his friend over, most likely, it was the amount of time he spent getting it and earning it.

And the betrayal and money his friend got out of it. Doesn't justify murder though.

Really don't want to drag this off-topic or into politics but iyfyoufhl what did the Columbine shooting have to do with respect and integrity?

Sorry, i was trying to say that it the murder was over something more than a bit of code on a server somewhere.

No need to say sorry, I know what you meant, I said something similar as well. I hate not knowing motives behind murder for definate!

^_^ < Guy sold sword.

^o^ < Guy tries to exlpain what he did with his friends sword.

x_x < Guy 18 seconds later.

Anime smilies, how very unappropriate! :naughty:

Heard of this before (was posted on these forums). Really stupid. Funny though that I brought it up just the other day...

Your sure? I can't tell from the news items whether it's recent or not. :o

the person was stabbed a few months ago, the sentencing was recent

Yeah I mean, its like killing your friend because you found out they sold your copy of hardcore porn :smoking: . You just make sure that he becomes your bitch until the dept has been repaid

Yeah, the guy said he was gonna pay him back too...
Wonder how close friends they were...

OOOOOH The thought of my friend selling my porn stash makes me so mad...

Anyway. I can see why he became pissed off, the amount of time and effort required to gain that sword was probably pretty significant, add to that the fact that this "friend" was either hated before or actually betrayed the killer and you have rage. Then just make sure that rage is applied to someone who is part of the population who can't control their rage and you have a dead "friend".

The suspended sentence given to Qui means he could spend the rest of his life behind bars, although it could be reduced to 15 years for good behaviour.
I can't stand things like this. He killed somebody over something that doesn't really exist!!! Why then, let him out for 'good behaviour'. They should take him off of death row for 'good behaviour', not just let him go....Just because he behaves himself doesn't change the fact that that guy was killed over a weapon from a game...

like that guy who bought a massive virtual land for 22,000 a cuple of months back.. hehe, remember that/

"You sold my sword?! It had +10 on orcs!... well... this letter opener has +10 on YOU! AIEEEE!!!"

*psycho chords*

Virtual property can be related to money in a way, its not actually physically worth anything, it's just what the other person will swap for it.

The Zhu guy who sold his friends sword for money and betrayed him, sounds like an asshole, though stabbing in the chest is a bit harsh, i would have kicked his face in.

Legally binding virtual property just wouldn't work since if the makers of an MMOG wanted to shut down their servers they'd be liable for all the data stored on those servers. Plus any game changes (like changing the properties of a weapon) could end them up in court.

did you have to pay actual money for the virtual sword er wha?

Yeah sounds silly doesnt it, i remeber a website called Habbo Hotel where you ring up to get 10 credits to buy virtual furniture for your rooms which costs a quid. The site gets all those £1's and gives out fake credits and furniture. They must make a fortune. If you do it your silly...

What about that Second Life MMORPG and Project Entropia. People are paying $50,000+ for some places I heard sometime ago.

so he sold a virtual sold?

I think we should consider buyers as stupid too

I thought it was Korea, not China...

It's not really too surprising. People have been killed over much smaller amounts of money.

If the guy is lucky, his cell has internet access.
I wouldn't be surprised if he considered a life of uninterrupted MMORPG'ing as more of a blessing than a curse.

what do you mean places?

I still can't get over the fact that someone would pay like 450 some pounds for a sword in a video game, that's just crazy. Crazy.

Only in America

LOL. Great.

Anyways, about those asians over there. It seems in many countries, ESPECIALLY korea, they take those videogames very seriously. Games such as Lineage, etc have huge followings that are far more hardcore than you might find in america... whereas if you talked about such a game in open you might be looked at funny, but there you'd likely have many people around who'd sit there and chat with you about it.

I was reading some article a while about, about 'gangs' who play those games, and who threaten and bully people for their virtual stuff, and has even gone as far as going to the gaming company and trying to get peoples information from the company so they can likely do harm to the individuals who have wronged them.

I mean... lighten up already, its just a game! I spent 7 years on a game character of mine... and he was lost the next day, or stolen... I would be *VERY* upset and angry, because I spent a good chunk of my life on this character, and all his items and such... but it'd be one of those things I could get over relatively fast, because while I played the character for seven years, I enjoyed the time that I played him, and my enjoyment didn't derive as much from the character or his items, as it did from all the friends and stuff in the game. Being so centered about personal items, whether real or virtual, isn't the best way to live life.

If time = money then it makes sense.

If this guy was spending all his time playing the game then his life is drawn more and more into said game. When that happens many real life material goods suddenly won't mean as much while virtual goods could suddenly be worth a lot more.

The less time you spend playing a game the less its virtual goods will be worth to you. The more time you spend inside the game then real material goods will be lower in value to you.

If only everybody played Counter-Strike, things like this wouldn't happen...
