A recent news item about the company ChoicePoint has grabbed my attention. For the people who don’t know, ChoicePoint is a company who’s sole purpose is to sell and verify personal information. If you have ever applied for a job at Target or CVS, or any company that had you fill the application out on a computer / electronically, chances are that ChoicePoint has all the information you filled in. This includes your Social Security Number, your address, phone number, any past names, date of birth, and even race / marital status. The scary part of this is that one can purchase a “Criminal Background Check” – which includes one’s Social Security Number, address, and any past criminal / court cases (and case numbers) for $25.95 from their website (for “Home” use), www.choicepoint.com. – All you need is the “victim’s” Name and Phone number.

This looks like another AD thread

Edit: Besides, why the hell would a terrorist care about me? Or any of the geeks on this board?

Mabye if a terrorist decided that he/she could obtain important info from you, such as where you are going, what you are doing, your job, background, they might also decide that they don't like you or your race, or your job, and will target you.

First of all, your insight must be so low that you dont even see that this is not an advertisement, however, its pointing out a company that is hazardous to your privacy.

Second, Terrorists in your definition is a rather specified term. I am talking about Identity Theives if you want me to be more specific. Crackers could also crack into the database and steal your personal information. Anyone could just create an account, and if they have your name and phone # they can find your SSN.

It's CYBERTERRORISM

The idea of running criminal checks on people to obtain information is hardly new. We've survived so far. :D

Well i appreciate you posting this, I like to know what going to affect my privacy, I know this doesn't strictly apply to me, as its US.

When I worked at a company for work experience, I found that you could access all the records of personal info (about 5000 people), it was just left unsecured on a server, sombody could have sold the data to a marketing company, or worse.

Hehe, i know there are alot of stuff like these all over the net :(
maybe Usama Bin Laden Jr is reading what im writing now :D
