Spurred along by Sulk's Thread about Books inside of Us. I feel the need to Write again - only question is what.

Space Empire invading Earth,
* Title reads well enough, as much as Hubble gave us the 6 Week warning as a Fleet just appeared outside Pluto - Earth isn't prepared.

Urban Resistance post American Revolution and the collapse of the Western World.
* Set in a slightly different Melbounre after the 3rd American Revolution - the Russians with some other European States Invade Aust. - follows the resistance.

or Swords and Magic *See this post.

I think your emphasis should not be on 'genre' but rather on "should I do a story about these issues and in this style, or about these ones?"

However, though I do not generally like fantasy novels - mostly because they divorce themselves all too much from the real world and too much imaginitive richness can learn us no lessons - I think the third idea is by far the best, and the most developed.

However, should you chose that one, you should do some research regarding ye olde worlde.

I recommend '1599 - A Year in the Life of Shakespeare' for elizabethan style, but dunno about earlier (you said 'dark age').

I'm thinking a cross-over Roman / dark age. Like some parts are Dark Ages Tech while the Empire is still Roman Era tech.

Umm... none of the above

Also why do all fantasy stories have to take place in a medieval type environment, I'm so sick of that.

Speaking of the Roman Empire, how about an alternate history type story where the dark ages never happened and technological advances continued uninterrupted since Roman times till the present day.

Well, lets just say that I have alot of shit in mind, and that the "Space Empire invades Earth." is the much later version of the Empire in the Roman idea.

SPQR, Shitly done - about 3 years ago but alot of fun...

As a massive <not geeky> Sci fi fan I would take the escapism path. Isaac Asminov's works is well ahead of it's time and you may wish to read a couple of his short story?s for inspiration such as Pebble in Sky.

Unfortunately the Space Empire invading Earth genre has been done to death, you may want to consider something a little less obvious.

Yer I know, other ideas have either already been done or are crap... One of my more wierd Sci-Fi ideas deals with a group of homeless being selected as fighters for a Nomad army, while they are off 'jump' near Earth. But its not anywhere near good in my mind at the moment.

Australia. Like the Tommorrow series without the disadvantage of not knowing who the **** your enemies are!

I always assumed it was the Indonesians.

/EDIT Come'on, give me ideas for my hard-boiled detective novel! ^^

(I might give it up because it's becoming horribly cliched... but I want to write a good crime fiction, damnit...)

What Sorta thing are you angling towards at the moment?

I might have some things up sleves if ya want - but need a bit of context...

Edit: Jintor, look here for previous stuff in the Urban Resistance movement For Jintor

Maby you should finish your other book before starting this one.

Robbo, you can just get a real car instead of that shit brick!

Update - i'm going with my Fantasy plotline, figured out a way to make it work well for once.

Have a few rounds on this, amongst the madness you'll find a killer storyline:-

http://www.penguinking.com/premise.php

randoms:-

1) Cynical gladiators fight the alien menace in a world devastated by nuclear war

2) Capitalist idealists perform bizarre rituals in modern-day Rome

3) Karate psychopaths search for meaning as the stars align and the Great Old Ones make their triumphant return

4)Librarian ninjas travel through time in the void between the stars

5) Bestial nymphomaniacs search for missing children on the dusty plains of Mars

It rules ;)

Write it, and I'll enjoy it. :E

Hahahahaha, not me.

I think I hit a good one. It's a series of murders that frame the story, although it doesn't start to link around them until the end. A guy whose dad was an 'agent' (but he didn't really get too interested), goes to his funeral... i still got to work out the tail end, but in my head, it seems to be working.

I'm going to end up starting a publishing company one day - i'll give you a ring Jintor when it does :P
