Ok I have a AMD Athlon XP 3200+, 700-odd MB or RAM and a 9800 pro. I start up doom 3 and its running alright then I click start new game and it gets to the bit where the woman is talking and the audio starts to loop itself on several little occasions like she would say the say word about 4 times over and over. This happens all the way to the start and when I actually start playing the FPS seems very low. I am running it on Medium Quality on 1024x768. Anyone know what the problem is? Its practically unplayable.

I have up to date Graphics/Sound/Motherboard drivers and the latest version of DirectX

I even tried it on the defaults and the audio still goes choppy and it loops certain parts and gets stuck and the FPS is incredibly low. SOMEBODY HELP ME!!!!

Weird. I have a quite lower configs and it runs on 1024 High with 0 problems.

What's your sound card?

Is surround sound on? If so, try turning it off (that's fixed sound problems for a few people - a 'make do' solution till it's properly sorted)

There's also plenty of tweaks for getting more fps.

I have a similar setup to you. This is my autoexec:

seta com_allowConsole "1"

seta image_downSizeLimit "512"
seta image_ignoreHighQuality "1"
seta image_downSizeBumpLimit "512"
seta image_downSizeSpecularLimit "64"

seta image_downSizeSpecular "1"
seta image_downSize "1"
seta image_forceDownSize "1"
seta image_lodbias "0"
seta r_preload "1"
seta r_skipBump "0"
seta r_shadows "0" //shadows off
seta r_useOptimizedShadows "1"
seta r_useTurboShadow "1"
seta g_bloodEffects "1"
seta g_decals "0"
seta g_showBrass "0"
//seta g_muzzleFlash "0"
seta g_doublevision "0"
seta g_showPlayerShadow "0"
seta image_anisotropy "0"
seta image_filter "GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_NEAREST"
seta image_useCache "1"
seta image_cacheMegs "256"
seta image_cacheMinK "3072"
seta r_displayRefresh "85" //same as monitor

//new stuff

seta r_multiSamples "0" //AA
seta cm_backFaceCull "1" //0 if trouble
seta com_purgeAll "1"
seta r_vertexBufferMegs "64"
seta r_orderIndexes "1"
seta r_usePortals "1"
seta com_videoram "128" //set to gpu
seta image_anisotropy "1" //AF

//fun stuff

bind - timescale 0.25
bind = timescale 1
bind [ g_stopTime 1
bind ] g_stopTime 0

(gets 62 fps on the timedemo - gfx on high, 1024*768. Shadows are off. With them on the average is 50 fps. Not bad for a 9800 pro :) )

my specs are as below and doom 3 is completely playable on 1024 with high detail...and your specs are better than mine lol.

hmm...try reinstalling your bios drivers or installing the new ones...if that doesnt help, get dx9.0c and reinstall the catalyst drivers afterwards. if that doesnt help...sacrifice your pc by completely reformating...but i cant see that really making a difference.

im no expert so that's my ideas for you.

I found out what it was, my dvd drive was set to PIO mode instead of DMA or something like that, but i reinstalled the sound drivers but now my sound is all fuzzy :hmph:
