Valve's Community & Developer Liaison, Chris Bokitch (using the screen-name autolycus in the following thread) has made numerous comments regarding the recent leak and distribution of Half-Life 2 source code and pre-release E3 material. Chris takes a firm however unprofessional stance, ridiculing various community comments and statements made by the "anonymous" distributer, and taking a below-the-belt shot at Planet Half-Life's FragMaster. It's an entertaining read, unfortunately not much more.

Sorry guys, his name in the thread is autolycus.

for a minute there i thought it was RoyalEF, becuase he kept defending valve about how stopping hackers is nearly impossible if not impossible.

Why is everyone jumping to the conclusion that the .nfo person is necessarily the same person as the hacker? How hard is it to repackage something?

first there is no source code... then the beta screenshots are fake, then the beta is fake, then the releaser is fake!!!
some people are so heavily in denial it isn't funny.

I didn't say he was fake, just that there is no way to tell whether he's the same person that did the hack and looked into Valve's systems. We have no idea how many hands these files have passed through, and frankly, whoever wrote the .nfo file seems a bit muddled: not exactly a criminal hacker mastermind, but a disgruntled fan who saw a chance to make some noise. Note that everything he said could have been said by anyone at all: nothing about it involved him having any sort of further secret information other than having played the beta himself. There were threats, but no confirmation or any sort of tagline by which he could be consistently recognized.

Why does the HL2.net staff have copies of these ILLEGAL documents attached to ILLEGAL files?

Well, Valve, the game hasn't been released and right now all we have is an alpha/beta, also no official statement from you, so who are we going to belive ?

Usually people belives in what they see and this game isn't finished by a long shot.

Please prove us wrong, the best you could do is to at least release an official demo and people wouldn't bother downloading the 1.4Gb beta + 130M "patch".

But I guess we will never see that, the official demo for HL1 was released over a year after the game was released and it didn't even show the game but had a completely different map.
