Sid Meier's trying to be all hip and cool now, apparently.

Civilization creator Sid Meier said this week that he and his 2K-owned studio, Firaxis, are working on a project dubbed "Civilization Network," a rendition of the strategy game for Facebook, due in 2010.

The announcement comes after the most recent franchise entry, Civilization Revolution, a turn-based strategy game that appeared on consoles and handhelds that streamlined the traditional PC-derived hardcore Civilization experience.

"I wanted to let you know we’ll soon be looking for beta testers to help us develop a unique new way to play Civilization," wrote Meier on the CivFanatics.com forum on Wednesday. "Ever since we finished Civilization Revolution last year, I’ve been looking at ways of expanding the Civ gameplay experience to include solo, competitive and cooperative play to take advantage of the uniqueness of social networks."

This sounds like putting a gorgeous supermodel naked in a cage with a monkey and trying to make them go at it.

That actually sounds pretty interesting from a multiplayer aspect if they don't have to lobotomise gameplay too much.

Never was a fan of facebook applications (except for Texas Hold 'Em), cause they're dumb most of the time, but that sound quite interesting.

yeah playing a week-long campaign with a couple of friends over facebook would be nice.

Don't do this to me, Sid. I've played Civ every night for the last two weeks. Don't keep pushing your opiates on me. My wife already took the kids. My friends won't let me back into the club house.

Also I'd much rather Civilization 5 now.

I like the notion of adding more fans to the userbase but yeah don't lose your hardcore fans

Also I'd much rather Civilization 5 now.

You mean, Civilization: Revolution, right?

:3

I'd like to see how this turns out. Might give me a reason to actually fill up Willie's page with obscenities.
