So... i'm sitting here, talking to myself(unrelated  ), and pondering over strategy games. I realize that I have never ever tried a civilization game.

So, I see that there is a civilization 3 'complete', which contains everything civ 3.

I was figuring, the best place to start, would be playing civ 3, with all the expansions, but i'm still uncertain if i'm entirely so sure I might enjoy it. I'm going to be downloading the full 60 minute(seems so damn short!) 1000mb trial, to see if its worth my time, but i'm worried I won't have enough time to accurately guage whether I enjoy it or not(information on how to renew the program trial can be PMed to me please!).

To further aid me, I would request that those of you who have played the game, to share your experiences with it, and what you think of the game either good or bad.

Was no other topic about Civ 3, so I decided to make one here :-P

EDIT: Damnit, I dont know where to download the trial now, gamespots file isn't there!

If you like Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri you'll -love- Civ 3.(Borrows heavily from Alpha Centauri)
The only imo, sad thing, is the Civs 3 lack of the UN.:(
I liked the "UN" in SMAC.

You poor thing!!:O Get the demo from GameSpot, it gives you a small taste of SMAC ;)
I found my old CD just yesterday and installed it, addicted again, only problem is it crashes sometimes and I'm not good with saving every turn..:(

Civ 3 is a great game. Basically you start with Settler and a Worker. When it's the Settler's turn to move, he has the option to build a City. When you found a city you can make it build things like Barracks, Walls, Workers, Settlers, Warriors, Archers (and too many more to count on 2 hands). As you upgrade other buildings and go through the ages, you can build better things. You can also research things such as The Wheel which takes a certain amount of turns to complete, but afterwards, you will be able to build Chariots etc etc.

You can stick your worker on Auto, and he'll go around creating roads between cities on his own. Roads let your units move more grid spaces per turn. He will also make roads to nearby resources such as gold. So try and build your cities near these resources.

I'm no expert, but I think the way to stay in the +, money wise, is to build a good amount of cities, since you're money will run out if you only have a few.

You can go to war against other nations, or sign peace treaties, then break the treaty by attacking them when you have a strong enough force, har har.

Here's a demo link I found - http://www.ausgamers.com/files/details/html/6283, If you don't like it at first, try it again later, it rules.

Nice things about civ3
-you can beat technology out of your enemies, meaning you agree to sign a peace treaty in exchange for technology
-if you develop faster than your enemies, you'll end up fighting their horses and warriors with your tanks, airplanes and long range missiles.
-you can manipulate the others to help you against a common ennemy, only to turn on them once they sent all their troops(although you'll have a hard time finding allies again)
-resource system is very good. you may start at a spot without any, only later you discover oil or alumium and you may find yourself surrounded by it. Trading is fun as well. If you are powerfull you'll be able to squize goods out of peace treaties.
-almost every unit is upgradable, meaning you can keep that unit of caveman you love so much and upgrade them up to paracommando's.
-endless replayablity
-multiplayer is in the gold version (do some research, be sure to grab it) and should get you games that last an entire week.

The game is good, no doubt about it.

It's been a very long time since I played it last but what I can remember of it was it was really damn hard to understand how to play. I had to keep referring to the manual for help, I didn't know even what to do when I first got in because I don't think they explained what I was supposed to be doing. It's probably just me that had this problem.
I also remember it was extremely frustrating when you went to attack someone's base because they would have a seemingly endless supply of units garrisoning it. Everytime you attack and killed one of the units another would pop up then another and another until you're ripping out your hair.

I'm pretty sure I liked the game but sadly can only remember the bad points of it. I do think you should download it because just about everyone loves it and it's very addictive when you get into it.

Understand how to play... Hard?
I've never ever needed to look at a manual for the Civ games or SMAC, I just learn as I go, alot faster for me...

civ 3 is a great game and ive been playing it for about 3 years now.
if you want to get the civ3 complete then go for it but iirc, you only need civlization 3 original and conquests. you dont need play the world since conquests has it already =). save money is all.
