I am a strafer. I come from the old school of ActionQuake (which was my favorite game for a long time) where circle straffing worked like a charm. People would duck or stand it one spot and I'd circle them like a shark and blow then appart. This method worked great in follow up games such as Unreal Tournament and even CS 1.6. When I try this in CS:S I die. I die. I die. I die! Usually to someone who has no mobility skills at all. I seem to have a real problem hitting the person at all when I do this actually. (I tild ` after every round to see damage)

Maybe I am just not playing CS:S how I should. Maybe I should just stand there, in one spot, and shoot at people. But I am finding breaking old habits hard. Does anyone else have much luck with straffing?

Could it be the hitbox theory where moving targets' hit boxes are all over the place. I have seen demos of the hitboxes in front of targets and it the back of targets - not really on the target. I have ghosted people when I am dead and seen some very weird behavior with where bullets are hitting. I guess I could attribute this to lag but I am a LPB and usually don't get over 60 ping (averaging in the 40s). If this is the problem could adjusting the cl_lagcompensate 1 option help this at all? Has anyone ever played with this setting?

I am not just some newb here saying I am leet and getting nothing to show for it. I usually do ok, I have my hot and cold streaks, winning some maps and top 2 or 3 on others. But something about this game just doesn't feel right. Maybe I am just getting old.

Anyways, are there any old school strafers out there experiencing similar effects? If so have you to switched to a strategy that works better?

Any constructive input would be appreciated as I am not blasting the game here, I just am looking for a solution.

A while ago someone told me to disable lagcompensate and it would make hitboxes work better. I believe I tried it the next few times I played and didn't notice much difference, but I'm interested to know exactly what the command alters.

I shoot where I see them at.
They die where they are at(if its enough damage to kill them).
From far to close.

-A 56ker

cl_lagcompensate should make the hitboxes lag behind the player so when 56kers aim at a player and shoot, the delay that's caused by their slower connection means the bullets they shoot don't actually hit until half a second to a second later, and the hitboxes lagging behind for them they still hit their target even if they are aiming at them.

So I figured turning it off would help, but it just seems pretty much the same or sometimes as if your firing blanks :p I hope Valve will sort something out soon though.

Is This It??

Found a very nice article on CS-Nation about some custom settings for CS to help with the hit boxes. I hope this works. I configured it all for my computer from work using WebEX but I can't play it till I get home tonight. I hope it all works. I'll post my views tomorrow. Anyway here is the article.

I did all the hitbox things. I am not going to lower the graphics right now because my system is pretty buff.

Thas the way it was meant to be, in css you are much less accurate while moving than standing and crouching in one space, so you will have to adjust. Although there is soem strafing possible with the MP5, well actuall that is the best technik for it, so if you wanna strafe uset he mp5. Listen css is just a very different game from the one you used to play, and requires different tactics, but from the sound of your post it seems you'd lreally like UT2K4, so if you havent got that, try it.

It worked in 1.6? Naaaaaaaaaaaawwwww. 1.6 you couldn't hit a person 2 meters away while moving unless using an mp5. it's so much easier to strafe kill in CS:S. but seriously, don't play CS like you would Quake DM.
