-Some educational game about a dog that loves cookies... So many memories :)
-Quake 1
-Doom 1, 2 and final doom
-Galctix
-Jill of the Jungle

-Final Fantasy

So no one thinks Half-Life is a classic game?

Half-Life 1 & 2
Fallout 1 & 2 (1 more than 2)
Duke Nukem 3D
DooM
System Shock II
Silent Hill
Final Fantasy 8

meant classic as in old - sorry, didnt know this had been discussed before...only recent to join.

What's the upward limit for "classic?" I consider classic games to be 10+ years ago.

Some favorite old ones:

Pong
Tanks
Megaman 2, 3
Clash at Demonhead
Lifeforce (Salamander)
Gunstar Heroes, which I believe is the third time I've said this on the forum!
Sonic 2
Jurassic Park (Genesis vers.)
Beavis and Butt-head (Genesis vers.)
Donkey Kong Country
Vampire Hunter (Darkstalkers 2: The Night Warriors)
Astal

Uh...bah, it's too early and I'm drawing a blank. Oh well those are mostly the important ones.

Danimal I think I might've played the game you were talking about (with the cookie-loving dog) in preschool. I'm trying to remember the name of it, I think it might've been Comparison Kitchen.

C&C
Deus Ex
Doom
Quake
Wolfenstein
Mario
Sonic
Megaman
Twisted Metal
Crash Bandicoot

many many more....

As someone said, XCOM:UFO DEFENSE absolutely rules. I still play it although I have to run a program that slows my pc down by 90%. Otherwise STARCONTROL was a tremendous game. I absolutely loved it. To go truley old school I'll throw Advanced Dungeons and Dragons for the Intelivision back in the early 80's into the mix.

X-Com Apocalypse > X-Com UFO Defense ;P
It's too bad I can't get it to run under XP(DosBOX) :(

Mimi la fourmie :E
Super Mario World
Mario Bros 3
Penny Racers (for the NES - think that's what it was called)

Lifeforce (Salamander)

Wow, someone else who actually knows what that game is. The konami code on that game=winner.

As for favorite old games:

System Shock 2
Duke3d
Doom & Doom2
Blood
B.A.T. (Old Cyberpunk RPG from UBI soft... classic.)
Super Mario Bros 1 & 3
Metroid Series
Legend of Zelda Series
Bubble Bobble
Mach Rider
Quake II
Contra

Sonic 1, 2, 3, & Knuckles and adventure (Dreamcast)
Mario (all of them, maybe not sunshine as it isn't that old, same for the GBA versions)
Crash Bandicoot (PSX)
FF7
Road Rash 2
Zelda: Ocarina Of Time
Duke Nukem 3D
Bubble Bobble
Shenmue 1 and 2 (Both on Dreamcast)
Conkers Bad Fur Day (N64)
Star Wars Episode 1: Pod Racer (N64)
Goldeneye (N64)
Perfect Dark (N64)
Destruction Derby 1 and 2 (PSX)
The Fantastic Dizzy (Mega drive)

And theres probably a few more i cannot remember right now.

Blood
Quest for Glory: So You Want To Be a Hero
Doom 2
Descent
Corncob 3D (bet none of you played THAT :E)
Duke Nukem 3D
Shadow Warrior

Best Game Ever!!! I love the realism and strategy. I just wish they would develop another version where you can attack other cities (rather than just defend) and play others online perhaps (although it will take a day per round).

other classics:

Lords of Magic
Duke Nukem 3D
Starcraft

Ultima Underworld
Populous
Simcity
Magic Carpet
Bubble Bobble
Scorched Earth
Mortal Combat
Duke Nukem 3D
Doom & Doom2
Monkey Island
Space Quest
Kings Quest
Rise of the Dragon
ZakMcKracken
Original Prince of Persia
Commander Keen
Mine Bombers (one of the great finnish mini games)
...so many great memories. there must be more, can´t remember them all :)

Blade Runner (adventure game)
Bioforge
Constructor (nice rts/building game like a mini sim-city, but not really...)
Virtua Fighter (Saturn)
Panzer Dragoon (Saturn)
South Park N64 game
System Shock 2
Monkey Island 1 & 2
Thief - The Dark Project
Age of Empires
MDK
Wipeout
Grim Fandango
Shinobi # (Game Gear, teh pink guy could wakl on wallz LOL WOWW!)

Alex Kidd In Miracle World (SMS) - Sonic ran past signs, Mario climbed up flags, but Alex is a true legend simply for eating a Hamburger to finish each level.
Final Fantasy VI (SNES) - My favorite FF anyway, but it just edges in under 10 years (my limit for something being considered classic here)
Monkey Island 1 and 2 (PC) - These games are absolute legends. Shame about the sequel...
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (MD / Genesis) - My favorite of the Sonic games. I lost far too much of my youth to them, but this one was the best balance of speed before it all started getting horribly cliched in design.
System Shock 1 (PC) - Ok, so I didn't experience the game until 2004 (no kidding), but it was well ahead of its time and insanely atmospheric. All hail our goddess SHODAN!
The Settlers (Amiga/PC) - Never owned it myself, but I used to love it's little brand of cuteness as you build little paths and houses and stuff. Used to play it splitscreen (two mice) vs a friend who had the game. As the series has gone on, it has become progressively less fun and really quite ugly. Yeah, i'd take 640x480 SVGA graphics over the high res crap the have today.

In attempt to be different, I've left out everything from the last ten years which are guaranteed instant classics, but I'll mention them by name anyway. Just to be difficult: Deus Ex 1, Final Fantasy 7/Tactics, Half-Life 1/2, Homeworld 1, Metal Gear Solid 1, System Shock 2 and Unreal Tournament.

Couldn't think of any at first, thanks for the refresher guys :P

Alex Kidd - I got up to the castle once, honest. Save feature, anyone?
Chrono Trigger - Rom, lost my save file in a format, GRRRRRRRR!
Command & Conquer - Classic. We used to line up a bunch of flamethrower guys and get them to force fire on the ground, then send troops through it. Best cutscenes ever.
Commander Keen - Really early on, the only thing I really remember is the pogo stick and his cool helmet. And getting kicked out of a friend's place by his mum cause I was playing it too much.
Diablo - Better online play than DII, honest. Except for the hacks. Who else remembers trading, where you'd each stand at opposite ends of the town square and drop your loot?
Doom - I remember being too petrified to exit the first room.
Duke3D - When I got my Celeron 366 we'd marvel over how well this'd run.
Sonic 2 / Sonic 3 / Sonic & Knuckles - A friend and I would play two player compulsively on weekends for some time. I'd always go Tails, it was fun being able to pick up the other character and fly them around.
Spear Of Destiny - Wolfenstein spinoff. Used to tag along with dad when he went to his mates for Trekky night and play the shareware level. Over, and over, and over, and over...
Starcraft - Used to hook up on modem with a mate, we'd coop against a couple CPU players. Great fun. Best RTS ever.
Stunt Car Racer - Shweet as Atari game where you raced around a raised track and did HUGE jumps and stuff. Real challenging, especially with my shitty joystick that would only respond if you practically arm wrestled it. Why were Atari games never playable on the keyboard? The system was a fecking keyboard.
Wacky Wheels - Mario Kart? Crash Team Racing? Pah. Supremely fun split screen race and battle modes. The PC sound still haunts me to this day...
Warcraft / Warcaft II - Alls I remember of the first is the dungeon levels, those were a blast. The second was awesome for the editor alone. A friend and I would spend hours on his dad's laptop making "Olympics" maps. We had a bunch of events like Peon races and large scale Ballista wars. Whoever lost would have to answer to the firing squad (archers, sadistic I know). We even had an opening ceremony where we'd get a bunch of Wizards to blow up some houses.

More when I remember them.

Wow, I thought I was the only one that played that! I used to like all the animals and stuff....

As for the other old games I liked (and still like):
-Commander Keen -- because everybody loves lollipops, soda, and teddy bears. The blue, jumping, clothes-wearing dog was scary though.
-Duke Nukum 1 -- side-scrolling. There were turkeys... and purple Energizer-bunny ripoffs.
-Wolfenstein -- "Get psyched!" Ahh, the game that taught me the word "psyched." Quite educational there...
-Doom 1 & 2 -- played both but only remember the second one, probably didn't finish either of them. There's certain levels I still remember though.
-Blood -- the carnival level! Mimes, JoJo the Idiot Boy, Happy Go Pukey, Seeing is Believing!! It's beautiful!
-Scorched Earth -- funky bombs, napalm, everything you could ever want to cause massive unrealistic multicolored destruction.
-Populous -- umm.. settle! knight! earthquake! volcano!
-Dr. Quandary's Island -- solve fun puzzles to get off Dr. Q's evil island. I played the whole game again over winter break, and found that I still lack the intellectual capacity of a fourth grader.
-Oregon Trail -- you could name people after people you know, or after your stuffed animals... not that I did that or anything... only in CivilizationII, where the evil fundamentalist Vikings captured all my dearest toys ;(

Duke Nukem 3D - Hands down, best classic game ever.
Mortal Kombat Trilogy
Blood
Doom 1, 2 and final
Quake 1 and 2 (don't remember last time i played Quake 2)
Contra series (for NES)
Ninja Turtles series (for NES)
BattleToads and DoubleDragon (for NES)
Tanks (for NES)

And a bunch of others that i forgot.

Starcraft - Used to hook up on modem with a mate, we'd coop against a couple CPU players. Great fun. Best RTS ever.
Why dint you just go on b.net x_X. Own some real scum.

Diablo - Better online play than DII, honest. Except for the hacks. Who else remembers trading, where you'd each stand at opposite ends of the town square and drop your loot?
Hell yeah I loved the oringal Diablo. It had a sense of..."Evil" or spookines to it all. D2 totally screwed that feeling. I remeber the trading.... :(.
A combination of D2 and D1 would equal a very kick ass game.
I also think that.... a 3rd person style(Like morrowind) plus the doom 3 engine + the d1 labrynth(Think of the dead people in there :) ) = Um... A sweet.....scarry.... Diablo!

*Turns a corner*
*Sees a dead man on a hook, with blood dropping down onto the floor in very high poly*
*Turns around sees 10 zombies*
*Uses his staff to cast firewall and they die*
I can only imagine how creepy you could make it :).
Creepy + Hack & Slash to me would equal fun. It keeps action and horror...add replayability and nice controls and everything else and you have a sweet game!!

BTW, blizzard is going to update sc with a 1.12 patch soon!

They havn't forgotten!

Ahh, Oregon Trail was awesome. It was like the ultimate road trip with your friends. The best part was going during summer, pushing the ox to their limit, and be nowhere near Oregon during winter. After running out of food and drowning in the river several times, one of my friends always got the infamous, "(Insert name here) HAS DIED FROM DYSENTERY."

You do know that the guys that made Caesar 3, made 2 other games after Caesar 3 called Pharoah and Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom. They are pretty much sequals to Caesar, but with different names. I guess Pharoah is the better one though.

Pharoah
Emperor (newest one) - http://emperor.sierra.com/home.jsp

I now hear they've (or a new team) finished working on a new city-builder game, Children of the Nile:
http://www.immortalcities.com/cotn/

I've not got it yet.

EDIT: Looks like it's not out in the UK until Feb 5th. Already out in the US, since the site has patches for it.

Sonic series
Road Rash Series
Ski or die
Street racer
Zombies ate my neighbours (Zombies EU title)
General Chaos
Doom 1-2
Duke Nukem 3D
Stunts

and many more..!!

Hasn't any RPG fan here played one of the ULTIMA games? I'm not talking about Ultima online or underground. I'm talking about Ultima 6 and 7(black gate/serpent isle)? Best rpg's in the world, ever. Graphics of U6 are very weak, but the game is great. U7 has very decent visuals, and its story and gameplay are very entertaining.

Notice: other games mensioned by everyone were also cool.

Snatcher ( an old Hideo kojima cyberpunk advanture)
Policenauts ( sequel of snatcher)
Metal gear series

Yeah! I used to have this for Atari but couldn't figure out how to play it. I accidentally caused the Apocalypse once :o

Shit yeah! Used to have this on the old school computer.

Anyone remember that paint program... shit I don't remember the name, it had the wacky dude, McGee or something, and it was all in this building, and there were tons of secrets you could find. It was almost like a game. And there was a writing program too... Creative Writer! Pwnage :D
