Datz rite :).

This thread is dedicated to classical music: expand your horizons, name your favorite piece, ask questions (I know quite a bit, especiallya bout piano classical music), etc...

I'm expecting a super-slow growth rate, but we can try.

My favorites:

Liszt - Polonaise E Major, Sonata B minor, Ballade no.1, la Campanella
Beethoven - Appasionata sonata, Hammerklavier, op 109, 8th & 9th symphonie
Hummel - Piano Concerto no.2
Rachmaninoff - Piano Concerto no.3
Volodos - Paraphrases on Mozart's turkish march
Chopin - Ballades, op.25
Prokofiev - Sonata no.7, Romeo and Juliet Suites
Alkan - Symphonie pour Piano

My least favorites, ever (can't stand these anymore):
Beethoven - Fur eliz
Mozart - Turkish March

Where can I "illegally pirate" those songs?

Edit - I went to my lady friend's house today. She's a band nerd and has this big piano, so I sat down with her and she played me Moonlight Sonata. I swear to god it was the most beautiful thing I've ever heard. Then she taught me how to do the first few lines of it, it was fun :)

Fur Elise, Beethovens 5th, 8th, and 9th (You've got good taste TheSomeone! Besides Your dislike of Fur Elise, HATEHATE!)
Acually, most of Beethovens stuff, and a little Mozart. I hate the shit out of Bach.

I'm sorry to say, I only know of the more famous composers, I don't know of too many not well knowns.. :(

BTW, is it really illegal if you download music that has no copywright because it's from like 1600-1700?

I like Mozart. The soundtrack from amadeus especially. ALthough I admit I don't listen to much classical. There was this one song I heard, a harp concierto. I forget who it was by, something like poddlenose. I'll look it up later.

Fur Elise is good but it's not Beethoven's best, moonlight Sonata first movement is by f'ing far.

A few of my favourites
Piano Concerto Number One - Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
Rigolleto Act 3
Carmen: Seguidilla
Die Wulkure
William Tell
anything by Beethoven
Rhapsody in Blue
1812
Claire De Lune
Adagio - Albinoni
Carmina Burana: O Fortuna
Fanfare for the Common Man
The Planets: Mars
Romeo and Juliet: Dance of the Knights
Prince Igor: Polovstian Dances
the theme song from 2001: A Space Odyseey

Dog--, You can't pirate classical music just as you can't pirate remakes of songs or movies you can't copywright music either, it's a different legal term ask Angry Lawyer or something.
This is the first time in a long time I have actually been interested in a thread not for spamming reasons in a long time.

Indeed, the copyright on the classical songs have likely expired, but that doesn't mean you can't pirate a recording of someone's performance of it.

Classical songs are easy to find and download from amateur musicians who just want exposure, though, so there's no real need to pirate anything.

Moonlight Sonata's the only real classical song that sticks in my head. For me, classical music is very situational. A lot of the time, I don't want to hear it. But if I'm in a suit, at a dinner party, then it works quite well.

Understandably, Bach is hard to appreciate, even for classical musicians. For most people, the tipping point at which they come to fall in love with bach is the Goldberg variations.

Two years ago I knew 4-5 composers, the really famous ones. Now I know some no one's ever heard of: hummel, alkan, scorjabi, burgmuller... Most people don't even know their names, and I can recgonize their music instantly. It's really not that hard to get into classical.

Mozart is nice, I'm not a big fan though. His music is very thin in texture, which is not a bad thing! just not my style.

Hhahah Beethoven way ****ing disagrees with you.

When asked about the moonlight, he bitterly grumbled: "Surely I've written better things!"

And understandibly, his other sonatas: appasionata, waldstein, tempest, pathetique, hammerkalvier, les adieux, op. 90, op. 109, op. 111 are all way musically superior, more beautiful, and more emotionally deep.

As for fur eliz :-/.

Great choices :), excet for o fortuna. Now this one I really don't get the appeal. It's sooo bad...

Awesome :D.

I would definetly post recordings but all of the ones I have are copyrighted. My AIM is EmmDoubleEw. Just putting that out there, no reason. :naughty:

When I switched piano teachers a while back, my new teacher asked me what my favorite composer was. I said Bach. I don't know why. I don't really like Bach that much. I think it was just the first person that came to mind.

I ended up playing through the Well-Tempered Clavier. It's not that bad really. Some of the songs are nice. I enjoyed Prelude 1, Prelude 7, Prelude & Fugue 8, Prelude 17, Prelude 21, and Prelude 22. And the guy wrote preludes and fugues in every single key. And then, he did it again (2nd book)! That's pretty hardcore. :p

Other than that, I like mostly Debussy and some Chopin. Pretty much everything from Debussy: Clair de Lune, La Fille Aux Cheveux de Lin, Reverie, Children's Corner. For Chopin, Nocturne Op 9 No. 2 is nice, and I also like Op 55 No. 1 (I'm not sure why.. that one doesn't seem very popular). I also like Mendelssohn: Trois Fantaisies ou Caprices, but I can't seem to find anything about that anywhere except from my old piano book.

Here's one of those websites where amateur pianists get to upload their recordings of classical music: http://www.pianosociety.com/

Oh... random question: Does anyone know what song they used in Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? That song is cool.

I'd post a link to Adagio in G minor for stings and organ but all I can find are midi's so the sound quality is poo. D:

Toccatta by Khachaturian
Scherzo Humoristique by Aaron Copland
Fantasie Impromptu by Chopin

@dfc05:

Oh man, it is ALL about Chopin's op. 55 no.1, I love to play it so much. Op. 9 no.2 is great as well, fairly popular.

I love Debussy. I love impressionism overall, but I can't really listen to it for extended periods of time. Have you ever heard Ravel's jeux d'eau? Great piece.

By the way, my extremely talented friend is on pianosociety: http://www.pianosociety.com/index.php?id=230

Interesting choice.

Fantasie Impromptu by Chopin
The only reason it exists is because Chopin was too much of a panzy to burn it himself, and his orders were not followed.

Moonlight Sonata is really the only one I've ever heard and liked, tbh.

It's really beautiful to listen to.

Moonlight Sonata just has... that effect one. It's like playing Doom when you were a little kid, it was special then because you kinda grew up with it. And now, 8 years later, it's still a favorite.

Anything Tchaikovsky, and Beethoven and Mozart. Doesn't matter which song or Symphony I listen to. There all pretty good. My favorite is Tchaikovsky's Symphony number 3 and a piece called "slave march". Great stuff.

Indeed. Beethoven has some of the best piano concertos I have ever heard. I can play Moonlight Sonata pretty well...it is one of my favorites..never gets old.

I could change your mind about Bach with 2 pieces:

1. Toccata and Fugue in D minor (Symphonic suite)
2. Passacaglia and Fugue (Symphonic suite)

These songs were originally designed for an organ, but someone recompsed them for an orchestra and they are fantastic. Passacagila is the best piece I have ever heard for an orchestra..ever.

I consider these pieces the "heavy metal" of classical, because of their dark and strong feeling and intense melodies.

Mendelssohn's Overture for A Midsummer Night's Dream is and always will be my favorite piece of classical music, though his incidental music that followed 17 years later is amazingly beautiful as well. I just love all of his music for A Midsummer Night's Dream.
