Clearing out Hl2 saves

Whenever i go to save game on Hl2 it takes ages to bring up the save menu (probably because of the large amount of saves i have). If i delete my save games will it still remember that i have completed the the game, and let me select a certain chapter from the new game menu? Didnt want to delete my saves and have to do the whole thing again...

delete away, I doubt it will remove all the chapters but if it does type "changelevel d3_breen" and that should bring all the chapters back

I recently deleted all my save games because i wanted to play through again on HARD. I unticked the 'read only' boxes on the 4 autosave items (I'd made them read only to cut down on stuttering during autosaves), Whent into the game & deleted everything. I then came out to make the firles read only again ............ Except they had all dissapeared! I thought these files were generated at install but it appears they don't get written until you encounter the first autosave point. I just had to play through again until the 4 files had been created & then make them read only again. I could still select any chapter though. even after I deleted all the save games.
