Hey me again :P

I'd like to take all the icons off my desktop, just to make it look purdy, I've seen it done a couple places. My Computer, My Network Places and the Recycle Bin won't budge, and every guide I've come across on intarweb requires editing the registry... is there an easier way?

I have to ask: What's the point of a desktop with no icons on it?

I only want quick access to a few programs, I can put those on the taskbar, and I don't mind using the Start Menu for games. I just wanna be able to see my wallpaper :P

Your talking shortcuts and cannot delete them as they are exe programs - quick fix below.

So open your windows explorer and from there take the desktop shortcuts and drop and drag them to a safe folder of your choice they are not deleted but yet they dissapear from the desktop.

Edit another tip - Now in windows explorer when opened you can see the desktop should be on the top of all the folders left side so if you ever have problems keeping your icons in perfect alignment lets say you move one by accident with your mouse just do like above and throw it in a folder then toss it back to the desktop and it gets perfectaly aligned.

Angain - if you ever want to reorganize what icons are on top like the order they stack just put the first one in and then the next and you can reorganize your icons the way you want them so maybe your ( mycomp ) is right at bottom next to start/off button. Good luck.

Turn on active desktop then elsewhere set it not to show icons when its active, there, all gone, but still there if you go back to a normal desktop so you don't lose anything

Ya you wont be able to take the ( Mycomp and IE ) off the desktop If I remember correctly I got them off before or Im just dreaming I did. lol

But I was just like you wanted a clean desktop and I think I set the file assosiations a specific way to do it. Or maybe I had done it with ghost scripts I used awhile back wish I could remember.

I'll try and see if I can jog my memory and see if I can get those off or come up with a sollution that wont hurt your PC..

I guess you are on WinXP: Right click on the desktop, select properties. Click on the "Desktop" tab. Click on the "customize Desktop" button. Uncheck My Documents, My computer, My network places and Internet explorer.

Delete all other shortcuts and you'll have a clean Desktop :)

I Just tryed setting the files to a bunch of things no luck sorry without using a script to alter the way your OS Shell functions you wont be able to.

You can get a script at Stardock website / it will cost money if its worth it to you. I advise to read up on stuff over there before using the trial shareware . They do have scripts that can alter the OS Shell and dock/undock your stuff plus maybe you might want to get the hide feature Like the MS Toolbar or the mouse hover over it type deal it will appear then dissapear when the mouse is no longer on over it.

And dont blame me if you ruin your PC using stardock stuff cuz I went haywire there before and its easy to get tons of files all mixed up by using 3rd party stuff. But thats a good start on where you may get the info.

There's always TweakUI and other lil freebie programs that can do it. Or just google for the registry fix to do it manually. Though I think the active desktop method is your best bet cause it doesn't change anything major so no worries about harming anything.

UGH people!

in Winxp just rightclick on the desktop, select arange icons by, then untick show desktop icons.

There fixed.

Just right-click on the background > Arrange Icons By > and uncheck "Show Desktop Icons"
