Whenever I try and play a CD from either of my optical drives, I get this odd clicking sound. It happens as well if I am playing an MP3 and reading data from an optical drive as well. Any ideas why this is happening?

Unnatural noises from anything mechanical is usually a sign of impending death.

Haha... thanks.

The clicking comes from the speakers though, not from the drives.

Speakers?

Double check to make sure all of your cables are securely plugged into your optical drives.

Should I be using those audio cables that plug directly into the sound card, or is the IDE interface fine?

IDE interface is fine. Those audio cables are useless.

Although if you ever play Audio CDs, the audio cables pass the sound directly to the card without using extra system resources. But I never do that nor do too many others.

The optical drive itself is clicking? No, that is not a good sign. hehe
Is it a memorex drive?

No, the clicking is coming from the speakers, not the optical drives. One's a Sony CD-RW, the other is a TDK DVD+R/W, and it happens with both of them.

Ah I passed right over that.
That makes scense as to why the audio cable was brought up.

Bump... could this be some sort of odd memory / processor / transfer speed problem? I've never had this problem before, and then it started happening after my last reformat.

I don't think it has anything to do with my optical drives' ability to transfer audio data, since it happens if I'm playing an MP3 file from the HD and transfering non-audio data from a CD at the same time. This is driving me nuts, PLEASE HELP!
