Clicking sound

I have a strange clicking sound coming through my headphones. Ever since my brother moved out, there has been a lack of computer speakers, so I've made do by plugging my headphones into the jack in the back (hehe). But just moments ago when I sat down to the computer and put on the headphones, a constant clicking noise has been coming through. It is unnaffected by mute, and is beginning to drive me insane.

Anybody know what could be wrong?


edit: whenever anything is played, ie youtube/itunes, the clicking goes away, but eventually comes back.

First of all, make sure the headphones are plugged in all the way. It's a common mistake to only plug them in partly. If that isn't the problem, try a different pair of headphones if you have some and see if the clicking goes away.
