Right now it's 2:32 and I can't sleep because of my damn ears. Everything I hear gets echoed and nothing is getting rid of my clogged ears. I've tried inhaling steam, drinking loads of water, boiling herbs in water and inhaling the steam, and sudafed. I'm on the 30th hour of this and I'm going insane.

Does anyone have any tips or suggestions to help me clear these things out?

Nope, it's strictly standard headphones for me.

30th hour? Seriously, I'd suggest talking with a doctor.

Hang your head upside-down...

I'm serious... try it... I remember I had a really bad ear thing once and it really helped relieve it for a bit... then I'd have to go do it again...

But yeah, when I was young I had ear infections a lot and things would sound all echo-y...

I had chronic ear infections as a kid, and I remember what they felt like. Both of mine currently have no pain, and there's no liquid to drain from them.

Looks like Dr. Salas is getting a call tomorrow.

Oh god..... I had horrible ear problems when I was little. I rememeber one time, I had an ear ach so bad..... I was screaming from the pain...and I started to not be able to breath because I couldnt stop crying. That sucked alot.

But yeah.....just go to the doctor.

been there...had similar problems when i was little...had to do surgery twice..i remember the pain...god damn :(..

Go to the doctor, they'll force out the wax by blasting hot water in the ear canal. Sounds gross, I know, but it doesn't hurt, and plus you can hear afterwards. Turns out that some people produce an unnecessarily large amount of wax, particularly when coupled with an ear infection. It varies by the person and it's nothing to be ashamed about, it's not a result of poor hygiene or some such thing. Many of my relatives have the same exact problem. The absolute worst thing you can do is clean out your ears with those Q-tip thingies, because (again, from two doctors I heard this) all they do is compact the wax deeper in the canal, delaying the problem but making it worse in the long run.

Yeah, it's rather gross, I know. But hey - would you rather not talk about gross stuff and be deaf? I didn't think so. Best just to see a doctor, or better yet, an Ear/Nose/Throat specialist. They have a funny official name, thraeceaioptician, or something... I forget.

Never stick anything larger than your elbow in your ear.

Everytime i put a ear tip thing in my ear it just ends up pushing more wax in and blocking everything up. My hearing is muffled for a week after that. Very annoying.

Rub kiwifruit on your legs and recite the entire script of "Freddy Got Fingered" in swahili.

...after you see a doctor about your ears.

ear aches SUCK. i used to get HORRIBLE ear aches, and i can admit that theyre one of the worst things ever. i hate them.

and yeah man, after 30 hours, id'e see someone....

I get truly abnormal amounts of earwax at times- squelchy, itchy filth. I use cotton buds constantly even though experts advise against them- always come out coated in orange sludge. UURGH.

I've had embarrassing moments when I've resorted to a compass or a pair of scissors to try and get some relief, only to have someone walk into the room and wonder what the freaking feck I'm doing.

Just reading this thread is making my ears hurt :(

I would have to say that ear ache only comes second to tooth ache in terms of annoyance.

I remember when i was little i had problems with glue ear. Had to have those grommet (not sure how to spell it) things in my ears to drain it out...Its weird because even today its like the holes still exist. I dont get how it works exactly, because i can just about breathe through my ears, its difficult though and hurst afterwards. Although when i went swimming a while back, i got kicked in the head (by accident) when we were dunking each other. His foot hit my ear and it hurt quite a bit, i noticed it was full of water for ages but the weirdest thing was the hole seemed bigger or something. Because i could really blow air out of it at quite a rate. People would be able to feel it if they put their hand to my ear. My hearing is still grear though :D

Anyway after waiting 30 hours i really tihnk now would be a good time to go to the doctor.

Edcrab, you should relly be careful about what you stick in your ear. i understand it must be bad to have excess wax but i know someone who prefferated their eardrum and now can't hear properly in that ear because they stuck a compas in their ear.

yeah, i had grommits too. and toothache.... lets not even go there :(

I don't know much about this.. But I guess you should try the pilot thingie, holding your nose with one hand (closing the airways) and blow as much as you can.

If you don't use q tips to clean your ears what do you use? My doctor said the same thing and I always end up just picking at my ears with my fingers(hahaha sick, I know) because just getting water in it does nothing.

One of my ears became unclogged and the other is the same. Hopefully it clears up.
Hydrogen Peroxide is a good cleaning agent for the ears.

Sometimes, at night, I can feel my ears in my sleep!

I have heard of some home remedy for ear infections (not for clearing out wax) that involves pouring hot vegetable oil into the ear. Sounds unpleasant.

I used to get alot of ear infections when I was little too, every time the doctor would prescribe some anti-biodic that was yellow and thick, and tasted just like bananas. That was the only medicine that I actually looked forward to taking.

You can gently warm some olive oil and pour that into your ear to remove excess wax, it works better than water.

Burning hot oil you say?

I had that yellow sludge that passed for medicine. It was quite nice, but it has nothing on calpol and the "natural" cough medicine we used to get. I remember i was born in october in a year where lots of babies got very bad coughs and chest infections...Every year after that i would get very bad coughs around october and the only medicine that worked was one that was made from all natural ingredients...It tasted so nice and although i never did, you could quite safely drink bottles of the stuff and never suffer ill effects other than perhaps a stomach ache from the strength, clear lungs and maybe a reduced resistance to certain infections.

I had that banana stuff once when I had a chest infection... it was gross. I HATE bananas and just the smell made me feel sick. But it was that or try to swallow some freakin huge pills. I chose to suffer via banana-goo, because that stuff was marginally better than choking...

haha reminds me of the final episodes of seinfeld when Kramer almost caused the plane they were on the crash because he was jumping up and down on the plane due to his ears being clogged.

Funny stuff.

A chest infection? lol, sounds pretty sick.

sickness in general is pretty shitty. You think it's no big deal when you're healthy, but as soon as your not... damn, but it's shitty to be sick. I just got over a cold, in fact.
